HEAVITREE ROCKETS 0 V HEMYOCK 0

Heavitree began a busy weekend of football against a spirited Hemyock team who battled hard throughout. These two teams played a really close fought match earlier in the season that the Rockets edged 4-3. Hemyock will have felt hard done by with the result that day but justice was served as Hemyock survived some scares to earn a hard fought point. The first half was fairly even with clear chances at a premium. Calum MacMartin hit the post for Heavitree after 15 minutes and the Hemyock keeper made some great saves - bearing in mind he was only a stand in keeper I fear for the normal goalie regaining his place for his deputies inspired keeping and safe handling kept Hemyock in the match during the second half.

Hemyock had their moments with their strong midfield making some telling runs but both teams defences were definitely on top. The second half was again fairly even but Heavitree began to gain a stranglehold on the game as it wore on. A moment of controversy seemed the turning point as Jack Williams ran onto a through ball and poked the ball past the Hemyock goalie. Queue celebrations for the home side as with just 15 minutes left it looked like one goal may settle it only for a flag to go up for offside. This seemed to galvanise the home team who laid siege to the Hemyock goal for the last quarter of an hour but it was just going to be one of those days. A mixture of good goalkeeping and some wayward finishing meant that the scoreline remained goaless for Heavitree's third draw and second goaless draw of the season. Hemyock showed great spirit throughout with their performance showing that their position in the table is surely false.

Man of the match for Heavitree went to CALUM MACMARTIN who has played consistently well for a number of weeks and tackled and passed superbly.

HEAVITREE ROCKETS 2 V CULLOMPTON RANGERS 5

Deja vu' as Heavitree suffered an identical scoreline to their opponents as the reverse fixture earlier in the season also finished 5-2. Cullompton showed that they are strong title contenders with a solid performance despite having some players missing. The Rockets also missing 3 regulars battled well but couldn't cope with the speed and trickery of the games outstanding player - Cullompton's Frank Rosenwald.

Rockets began well with Ben Howkins having the ball in the net early on with an offside flag ruling the goal out. Cullompton then hit Heavitree with a quick double - the 1st a tap in after a good team move and the second a well taken strike after the ball came back from a poor clearance. Having already been denied a penalty after a good shout Cullompton were awarded a penalty at the second time of asking after an unlucky handball. The ball was dispatched to make the scoreline 3-0. Jack Williams nearly reduced the arrears but stopped short when one on one with the keeper thinking he had been given offside when he hadn't and the unfortunate Howkins saw his shot agonisingly hit the post for Heavitree.

The second half was more even. Deji Akinpelu had a fine game for Heavitree in midfield with his strength winning the ball for his team on numerous occasions. It was his flicked header that looped over an under pressure keeper and dropped just over the line to make it 3-1. Howkins who switched to full back had a great game as did Calum MacMartin who filled in at right back but it was Tom Scrivens who gave a captains performance with some great last ditch tackles to keep Heavitree in the match. He slid in with well timed challenges on numerous occasions to keep Cullompton's rampaging forward line out. Frank Rosenwalds quick feet, speed and ability were a highlight as twice his mazy runs ended in great finishes to complete a hat trick and make the score 5-1. Jack Williams who (as usual) gave 100% and ran his socks off was rewarded with a late consolation for Heavitree

Man of the match for the Rockets was Tom"The Bulldozer" Scrivens

Cully U12s win against fantatsically spirited West Hill

Cullompton started very slowly, but soon started to pass the ball around making it difficult for the 9 man West Hill team. The pressure took its toll and Cullompton soon scored. But all praise to West Hill they kept battling like you would not believe and played the better football. The second half West Hill held strong for the first 15 minutes but succumbed to the relentless pressure of only having 9 men, but still they scored 2 more good goals. Final score was 11-3, but all praise must go to West Hill for their dogged determination and great team spirit, never once giving up or dropping their heads. WELL DONE!

FENITON 5 HEAVITREE ROCKETS 4

Feniton & Heavitree Rockets played out a very entertaining nine goal thriller that was great for the neutral supporter and not so good for the coaches and supporters nerves. The first 20 minutes were very even with both teams looking for opportunities without any success. Feniton bagan to exert more pressure as the half wore on and looked the more likely to take the lead. It was however a hopeful long ball that gave them an advantage with a Rockets defender misjudging the bounce of a clearance which the Feniton forward latched onto very quickly holding off a challenge and firing an excellent shot past James Welch in the Heavitree goal to give Feniton the lead.

A succession of very well taken corners were creating problems in the Heavitree box as athough both teams seemed reluctant to attack the ball there were numerous Feniton players unmarked on the edge of the box to put the ball back into the danger zone. Two quick goals resulted and it was this bad 10 minute spell that eventually proved the Rockets downfall. Just before halftime Heavitree grabbed a lifeline with a superb move. The ball was fed out to the lively Jack Williams who pushed an inch perfect pass into the path of Ben Howkins who finished well to make the scoreline 3-1 to Feniton at half time.

The second half proved eventful with Feniton adding an early 4th with a good strike from the edge of the box which gave the keeper no chance. Not to be too downhearted the Rockets then started to create better attacks with the ever improving Calum MacMartin having another good game in midfield. Jack Williams who worked tirelessly throughout bravely charged down the keepers clearance collected the ball and knocked it into the net to make it 4-2 before Howkins used his pace to latch onto a through ball and fire home to make it 4-3 and game on.

Feniton didn't panic and scored a long range fifth and eventually decisive goal via a cross come shot which sailed over the unlucky James Welch and into the net. Howkins completed his hat trick a minute later after another forceful run outpacing the home defence and firing through the keepers legs to make it 5-4 with ten minutes to play. Jack Conway then had a glorius chance to even things up but just mishit his shot and both Williams and Howkins went close during a late onslaught. Feniton were unlucky to not add further goals themselves hitting the woodwork no less than 3 times during the match and having other good chances to add to their tally.

Overall this was probably a fair result on balance with both teams deserving credit for their part in a hard fought but ultimately very enjoyable match. Also special mention to the Feniton coach Rob Brown who refereed the match superbly and impartially whilst ignoring his undoubted desire to shout instructions to his team!

James Welch once again played well as stand in keeper for the Rockets. He has played there 3 times this season and has always had a good game. His versatility has proved very important for the Rockets this season. Ben Howkins also played well with his second hat trick of the season but Man of the match went to Jack Williams whose tenacity and effort kept his team in it.

Cullompton 8 Hemyock 0

This was very much a case of men against boys as Cullompton showed what a good team they are as they tore apart a Hemyock side who were no match. Hemyock did start well with Ashley Jaji making some strong runs and trying to link up with Liam Travers up front but each time they were stopped by a strong defence which gave the boys no room.

Eventually Cullompton opened the scoring and never looked back. They had two boys in midfield that controlled everything and were very strong in the tackle. The score at half time was 4-0 and eventually Cullompton scored another four to make the score 8-0. This was a real eye opener for the Hemyock boys.

Great credit should be given to Paul Kirby the Cullompton manager for rotating his side and taking his stronger players of as the score could have been a lot more.

OTTERY ST MARY 7 HEAVITREE ROCKETS 0

Heavitree once again served up one of their worst performances of the season against Ottery St Mary during this comprehensive defeat. The Otters must look forward to playing Heavitree as they kicked off the season with an equally comfortable 8-0 victory and this was not much different. Hindered by a few late withdrawals to key players and fielding the bare 11 players the Rockets started quite well and for the first 10 minutes or so the game was scoreless and reasonably even. Ottery began to impose themselves and played some slick passing football to demonstrate why they have a 100% record so far. The first goal came when the Rockets goalie was lobbed from close range with a second in identical fashion following shortly after. 2 became 4 before half time after a mixture of poor defending and some good interplay from an impressive Ottery forward line.

The second half was pretty much one way traffic as Ottery dominated, helped by some calamitous clearances. Being overrun in midfield meant that the Heavitree strikers barely had a sniff of goal with the exception of a good 10 minute spell mid way through the half where at least the Ottery St Mary keeper was forced into a couple of saves. Some poor Ottery finishing kept the scoreline in single figures with a seventh being added right on full time where Heavitree were relieved to hear the final whistle.

Daniel Bennett was superb for Heavitree in easily winning man of the match and if not for his intervention on numerous times the scoreline may well have been greater. Curtis Holwell also played quite well in goal and came to his sides aid at times.

Heavitree should not be too down as Ottery are a very good team and are unbeaten for a reason playing some quick attractive passing football. This also falls on the back of Heavitree having gone 5 games in the league unbeaten. They will no doubt pick themselves up during a busy run of games knowing that they are unlikely to come up against opposition of this standard every week. Well done to Ottery who showed that they are very strong title challengers!

HEAVITREE ROCKETS 2 v CULM EAGLES 2

Both Heavitree & Culm fought out a great match played on a cold morning with honours eventually ending even. There were doubts whether the game would get underway but eventually after an inspection and a change of pitch the game kicked off. Heavitree started well and took the lead after only 3 minutes with a goal from Ben Howkins who provided a great finish with his left foot across the goal and in at the far post after good play from Jack Williams. Both sides were finding clear cut chances hard to come by in an even half but Heavitree increased the lead just past 25 mins when the prolific Williams cooly slotted home his 16th goal of the season. There was some fine build up play from Deji Akinpelu and Alan Needs who had his best game of the season by far battling on the left wing. The half ended 2-0 to Heavitree with the back four of Tom Scrivens, Zak Lee, Jack Moxey and the ever reliable Dan Bennett holding firm.

The second half started just as Heavitree expected with Culm pushing to get back into the match and beginning to force themselves back into it. Chances were begining to be created but a mixture of some great last ditch tackles and safe goalkeeping meant the scoreline stayed as it was. The turning point came 10 minutes into the second half when Williams was bought down on the edge of the box and a penalty to Heavitree was awarded. Deji Akinpelu stepped up confidently and powered a hard shot at the goal, but unfortunately it was straight at the keeper who got two hands to the ball and palmed it to safety where it was quickly cleared. This seemed to inspire Culm who grabbed a lifeline a few minutes later with a goal from James Brown and a second from the same player followed shortly after to make the game even. Despite this quick turnaround in fortunes Heavitree refused to fold and both teams traded chances with Culm having the better of the second half. A good chance was missed when a Culm player went through one on one but pushed his shot wide. At the other end Ben Howkins just missed out on a lob over the keeper.

The final whistle bought an end to an entertaining and hard fought match with a fine fight back from Culm showing why they are strong challengers for the title. The Rockets however, must take heart from their best performance of the season and giving a very good team a very tough match

The outstanding Calum MacMartin had a fine game for Heavitree in midfield but man of the match went to Tom Scrivens who was superb in defence all day for the Rockets and helped earn his side an excellent point against the league leaders.

Well done to both teams!

BRADNINCH 3 v HEAVITREE ROCKETS 5

Bradninch & Heavitree fought out a keenly contested match where both teams let a lead slip before Heavitree came out on top. The Rockets started brightly despite only having played once in the last few months with the lively strike pairing of Jack Williams and Ben Howkins giving the home defence problems. It was only 3 minutes before a fine ball from Williams released Ben Howkins to blast the ball home.

It was 2-0 shortly after with Williams, who worked tirelessley throughout, adding a second after a good move down the left. Any aspirations of thinking this would be a comfortable win were quickly dispelled as the home side showed great character to fight back. Fresh from their first win league the week before Bradninch came storming back at the Rockets with a defensive slip allowing the centre forward time to cooly slot home. An equaliser shortly followed with an incisive finish to beat the keeper to a ball played in to the near post. The turnaround was complete with another fine strike from just outside the box which gave Bradninch a 3-2 lead.

It remained like this until Williams added an equaliser before the break for the teams to turn around at 3-3 in an entertaining first half with both teams rueing missed opportunities to have extended leads whilst in front.

The second half was a different story as chances were fewer and defences seemed a bit more organised. Tom'Bulldozer' Scrivens was marshalling the Rockets defence superbly which restricted Bradninch to just a handful of half chances. At the other end chances came and went and as the time ticked on and it looked like it would be a frustrating end to the match. It took 2 pieces of individual magic to seal the game for the Rockets. Firstly the impressive Ben Howkins picked the ball up just outside his own penalty box. He ran at the home midfield and was lucky to break through a couple of tackles. He then surprised the home defence by pushing the ball through a gap and outpacing the last man and slotting the ball in to score his second and give the Rockets the lead. After a few scares it looked like this would be the final score until, with virtually the last kick of the ball, debutant Deji Akinpelu scored with a wondeful long range shot to complete the scoring and give the Rockets a 5-3 win to move them up to fourth in the table.

Bradninch must come out of the game with great credit and they showed how much they have improved as a team having lost the reverse fixture 9-2. they battled very well throughout and will surely pick up more points as the season goes on with the same attitude.

A relief to have finally played some football.

Heavitree Man of the Match: Daniel Benett - Great battling, tackling and distribution, especially in a much improved second half.

SIDMOUTH RAIDERS 0 HEAVITREE ROCKETS 5

Sidmouth Raiders and Heavitree Rockets kicked off early due to a fixture clash with Sidmouth Warriors also being at home on the same morning. The cold and damp conditions weren't ideal but both sides put in a wholehearted performance. The Rockets started much the stronger against their opponents who battled well with a weakened team and only 10 players. The Raiders defended deep getting bodies behind the ball and made life very difficult for the Rockets who were dominating but finding clear cut chances hard to come by. Heavitree were restricted to several long range shots that failed to seriously test the home keeper and a few half chances that went begging. Raiders continued to battle hard with some good tackling and strong challenges keeping the Rockets at bay. As the half wore on the Rockets continued to press and were eventually rewarded just before half time when the excellent Ben Howkins outstripped his marker, who up until then had shackled him very well, and blasted a fine shot with his left foot across the goal and into the far corner to put them 1-0 up at the break.

With the Rockets keeping substitutes rolling due to the cold conditions and the Raiders begining to tire the game opened up in the second half. The Raiders abandoned their deep defending which had served them so well in the first half and pushed players up in search of an equaliser. This created a lot more space for the quick Jack Williams and Ben Howkins to exploit and they took their chances much better. A second goal was scored by Williams after excellent work by Calum MacMartin and a third soon followed after a superb one two between Howkins and Williams, who were now linking up very well, resulted in the former adding his second of the game. He soon repaid the compliment with a fine cross for Williams to slot in and then Williams completed the scoring and his hat trick by beating the offside trap and a race with the keeper to slot in.

The Rockets defence of the superb Dan Bennett, Jack Moxey, James Welch , Tom Scrivens and Zak Lee were outstanding leaving Curtis Holwell a virtual spectator for much of the game in the Heavitree goal. The only downside of the match being a late injury to skipper Tom Scrivens which we all hoping is not as serious as first feared.

Heavitree Man of the Match: Tough decision but given to James Welch for a series of strong commited performances and some good tackling and passing.

Bradninch 4 Hemyock 8

On a very wet and sticky pitch which did not allow for to much good football this was a good honest game between two evenly matched sides, in which the boys should take great credit for giving the watching crowd a great game.

Hemyock started well and quickly took a 2 goal lead scored by Liam Travers and the impressive Ashley Jaji. As usual with Hemyock they then sat back and allowed the improving Bradninch back into the game to make the score 2-1. The speed of Liam Travers up front was the major difference between the sides and he completed his hat-trick before half time.

Second half saw the Bradninch boys batter the Hemyock goal and it took some great saves from Jack Churchill to keep the score the same. The scoring then became very even with each side taking it in turn to score.

Liam Travers ended up with 5 goals and man of the match, Ashley Jaji 1, Mike Ellacott 1 and Jordan Travers up from the back ramming home his goal. Again credit to both sides for making the game so exciting.

Feniton matchday Report

Feniton struggled their way to a fourth win of the season against a weakened but determined West Hill team.  Tom Gurney opened the scoring in the second minute with a long range effort that looped over the stranded West Hill keeper.  Feniton continued to press going downhill but weren't playing the passing football that had served them well this season. After 15 minutes Joe Titmuss popped up at the far post to double Feniton's lead with a crisp finish into the roof of the net.

Feniton's third was delayed by an interesting refereeing decision.  Jack Lovegrove's shot hit the back of the net for his first goal of the season, however, the referee decided that on the way into the net it struck a West Hill hand and awarded a penalty.  To the bewilderment of the away supporters the referee then failed to dismiss the culprit for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity.  Feniton then compounded the error by missing the penalty !  Soon after, Tom Gurney was on the end of a perfect Josh Tree cross to confirm the three goal lead.  West Hill, to their credit, never gave up and with James Mattin at the heart of most of their good work West Hill got a goal back.  A shot from the left beat the keeper and came back off the post and after a minor scramble the ball ended up in the back of the Feniton net.

The second half started with Feniton looking a bit more lively but when an excellent Josh Tree effort made the score 4-1 they thought their work was done.  West Hill soon put them right as they ran straight through the Feniton defence from the kick off for James Mattin to bring the deficit back to two goals.

As the rain appeared late in the second half the game descended into a scrappy battle with few claer cut chances.  Feniton remain fifth in the table but credit must go to all of the West Hill team who never stopped battling.

Heavitree Rockets 0 Sidmouth Warriors 0

Heavitree Rockets and Sidmouth Warriors played out a hard fought encounter in a game that neither side really deserved to lose. The scoreline may indicate that the game was dull but in truth the scoreline didn't reflect the football on offer with the parents being treated to a game that at times went from end to end.

Previous encounters between the sides have resulted in a heavy defeats for the Rockets and they were keen to put that hoodoo to rest with a determined first half showing. The defence was expertly marshalled by Tom Scrivens who was back to his best form in a strong display at the heart of the defence. He was joined by Daniel Bennett, Jack Moxey and James Welch (fresh his heroics in goal the previous week) and together they held firm against a Sidmouth team who pressed hard to take the lead. Curtis Holwell played superbly in the Heavitree goal and made some good saves including a fine one handed save diving to his left from a well placed Sidmouth shot.

Looking dangerous on the break Heavitree pushed forward when given the opportunity and the tireless Jack Williams and Ben Howkins both took on the Sidmouth defence who also stayed resilient.

Going into the second half the Sidmouth team seemed to be retaining the ball better with some good runs from deep positions resulting in some half chances where only great tackling and delayed shooting kept the scoreline goaless. Despite their territorial advantage the Rockets still continued to create some good opportunities with Alan Needs and Sam Vittles playing some fine balls through to the hardworking forwards.

Both teams continued to press in the final minutes with Sidmouth again having more of the ball in midfield but Heavitree clearing their lines well. The best chance of the match fell late on to the Rockets Jack Williams who timed his run well, ran onto a good through ball but agonisingly placed a well driven shot just wide of the far post. That proved to be the last clear cut chance of a really good game with Sidmouth deserving great credit for once again showing themselves to be a well supported and organised team.

The Rockets have also shown massive improvement as a team in a game that they would have undoubtably lost last season. Man of the match was a difficult decision but Jack Moxey has been a consistently good performer throughout the season in defence and so with a scoreless draw it seemed right that he should get the vote. Well done to both teams!

HEMYOCK 3 HEAVITREE ROCKETS 4 (Rockets Report)

Heavitree Rockets escaped with a win to remain in mid table during this keenly contested and topsy turvy battle that saw a very entertaining game played end to end. Both teams contrived to take and subsequently lose the lead during a match that really could have gone either way up until the final whistle. Hemyock will no doubt take heart from a very close match that they will feel hard done by to have lost.

The home side started the stronger and dominated the early stages although the Rockets slowly gained in confidence the longer the game remained scoreless and began to impose themselves as the half wore on. It was 20 minutes before the 1st goal with a long range cross come shot which deceived the keeper and bounced into the far corner. Hemyock responded quickly with a long range strike giving James Welch no chance in the Heavitree goal. Just before half time Ben Howkins scored his second of the game with a fine run and placed shot into the far left hand corner to make the half time score 2-1 to Heavitree.

The second half started with Hemyock dominating proceedings and they deservedly equalised with a good shot again giving the keeper little chance. They were cruelly denied another goal that their dominance deserved after a shot was cleared off the last by the excellent Daniel Bennett. Ther may have been some debate as to whether it had crossed the line but the referee and linesman were not convinced so play resumed. The home side pressure continued and they took the lead after some hesitation from the Rockets defence and some quick play from Hemyock which resulted in a calm shot across the keeper and into the net to give them the lead for the 1st time.

This seemed to give the Rockets a wake up call they needed and they showed great character to battle back with Hemyock inviting pressure through maybe being to anxious to secure a first win of the season. Ben Howkins twice showed the defence a clean pair of heels to have great chances to equalise with the keeper pulling off some superb point blank saves to keep the home side in front. Alan Needs eventually got the equaliser after a cruel deflection left the keeper wrongfooted and at this point it really was anybody's game. With a little under 2 minutes left Ben Howkins completed a great hat trick with a beautiful shot into the top corner restoring Heavitree's advantage.

Not to be outdone Hemyock pushed forward and only a fine late save from stand in keeper Welch kept Hemyock out as he plunged low down to his left to hold onto the ball almost on the line.

Relief for Heavitree at the final whistle but on this performance Hemyock don't deserve to be where they are in the league and they can take heart from knowing that a win surely isn't far away.

Great performances from Jack Moxey, Dan Bennett & James Welch but Man of the Match to Ben Howkins for a great hat trick and all round play - surely one of Heavitree's most improved players of the season.

Hemyock 3 Heavitree Rockets 4

In what was the best match of the season Hemyock were very unlucky to come away with no points. The first 10 minutes belonged to Hemyock with fine build up work but with no rewards. Heavitree slowly got into the match and scored first with a cross come shot which gave James Churchill no chance in goal.

This goal gave Heavitree heart and it took a great save from James to keep the score 1-0. Hemyock finally found the back of the net when a slice shot from Josh Allen sailed over the Heavitree keeper. Heavitree went 2-1 just before half time when a great run from their number 11 was cooly finished as he slipped it past James in goal. Second half started and it was all Hemyock and it was no surprise when Jack Aldred turned 2 defenders to score a great goal to make it 2-2.

This quickly became 3-2 when a superb flick on from man of the match Ashley Jaji allowed Liam Travers to shoot past the Rockets keeper. Hemyock then seem to sit back and the Rockets had 2 or 3 one on ones which they did not finish because of great defending or good goalkeeping. Eventually they did manage to equalise with a deflected shot which gave James no chance. The game seemed to be heading for a draw which would have been a fair result but with 1 minute left on the clock the Rockets number 11 hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Still Hemyock had one more chance but Tom Perry shot was well saved by the keeper down to his left. So it was a very disappointed Hemyock at the end but the parents and coaches were very proud of the great football that was played. Mention should go to the Rockets for making it such a great game.

Culm 4 - 2 Sidmouth

Culm United entertained Sidmouth Warriors in a close match where the first half belonged to both teams. Sidmouth attacked well behind Culm's defence, missing Daniel Conn but covered well by Aaron yells, but Culm's build up play was more purposful and the Sidmouth glovesman had slightly more to do.

Some good goals from Cory clench and James brown ended the first half. Sidmouth scored early in the second half and it spurned Culm onto a quick reply from a great 25 yard strike from Harry Jee. Soon after Cory Clench who was having a good game had to be replaced after a head collision.

It had to be said for the young man that though he couldn't play he refused to leave the match for a hospital visit to stay and watch his team play. William Manning played his first game and showed some promising signs working hard on the left for the ball and playing well between the midfielders and it wasn't long before he had a strong shot well saved. this followed a succession of shots from a number of Culm's players all being denied from the Sidmouth keeper or the posts.

Sidmouth then applied a good 10 minutes of pressure on the Culms defensive line and though they dealt with well it was at times very nervy for Culm's supporters to watch. The game ended 4-2 to Culm putting them top of the EYL given that a the other 3 teams at the top didn't play today.

Sidmouth Raiders 3 - 0 Hemyock

The morning started with heavy rain and both teams surprised that the game was going ahead but it was well worth standing in the downpour to watch the good football that was produced.

The first goal of the game was scored by Dan Swain who tapped the ball in after a fumble in the goal mouth. The ball was under the control of the Raiders for the majority of the first half with Josh Worthington scoring from at least 20 yards out by lobbing the keeper. The second half started with the score at 2-0 with Hemyock battling well. Josh Edwards and Lewis Masters were unlucky to get their names on the score sheet but Swain made it 3-0 by coming through from midfield and placing the ball past the goalkeeper.

It was again hard this week for the parents to pick their Man of the Match but the honour was shared by Brett Lines and Matt Saunders both who had an excellent game, although credit has all the boys who are really starting to come together to make a great team.

Feniton 8 - 0 Sidmouth Raiders

Feniton started the game well and were constantly attacking for the first period of the game, only a number of fine saves by Toby Lee in the Sidmouth goal keeping the score at 0-0.  After 15 minutes a strong run by Tom Harrison into the box was ended by a push in the back and a penalty resulted.

George Southall-Brown sent the keeper the wrong way to open the scoring.  Three minutes later a mazy run from Harrison cutting in from the left ended with a perfect layback for Sam Titmuss to make it 2-0.  Shortly afterwards Josh Tree hit a crisp shot from the inside left channel which clipped a Sidmouth defender to leave the keeper stranded and the score at 3-0.

Sidmouth started to come more into the game at this point and Ellis Gage made a strong run through the middle only for Scott Kelly in the Feniton goal to force him wide and make the angle tight enough for Gage's shot to roll agonisingly wide.  Feniton kept pressing though and with Joe Titmuss rifling the ball into the roof of the net and Sam Titmuss sneaking back from an offside position to tuck the ball away and make it 5-0 at half time.

The second half was a lot more even with Sidmouth coming more into the game although only seriously troubling Kelly with one well hit free kick from the edge of the box which was well saved.  Feniton made it 6-0 after 10 minutes of the second half through Joe Titmuss' second goal.  The next fifteen minutes seemed to be played in the middle of the park as the game became a bit scrappy.

As full time approached Josh Tree scored his second with a long range effort and Jamie Hill scored his first for Feniton from a tight angle after a run which saw him beat three defenders before shooting.  The final score of 8-0 flattered Feniton slightly but was a result of some excellent finishing rather than any poor defending.

Sidmouth's keeper Lee deserves a special mention as his efforts did not deserve the scoreline he suffered.

Feniton, meanwhile, enjoyed their biggest win for sometime in a result which had been coming, judging by previous performances.  Their challenge now is to show it was not a one off !

CULLOMPTON RANGERS 5 - 2 HEAVITREE ROCKETS

Heavitree would like to express their gratitude for a great reception and the hospitality shown by Cullompton in this hard fought encounter.

The hospitality extended to the pitch during the initial 15 minutes as Heavitree attacked with pace and purpose as gaps appeared in the Cullompton defence. Ben Howkins scored his third goal in 3 games to give the visitors a lead in only the second minute with a well placed shot from inside the area. This was shortly followed by a second goal from the hard working Max Mortimore who picked the ball up and let fly with a well struck shot that the keeper got both hands to but could only palm it into the net to make the game 2-0 to Heavitree.

At this point Heavitree were well in control and a third goal may have put the game beyond the home team. As the half wore on both teams created chances in a free flowing entertaining match but it was Cullompton who showed great spirit to fight back before the interval. Firstly a penalty was awarded after a handball on the goalline.

The ball was placed onto the penalty spot ,but was in a divot which resulted in a miskicked weak penalty straight at the keeper. To the Rockets dismay the ball squirmed through the keepers gloves and trickled through his legs and in slow motion rolled painstakingingly over the line to make the score 2-1.

Perhaps justice was served after the incident in the build up!. Cullompton were now in the ascendancy and started to push forward in search of an equalizer which duly arrived in the 41st minute of the first half (now I know how Mark Hughes feels) with a well placed lob over the keeper.

With two quick goals before the break the inititive had been wresteld away from the Rockets and was back with the home team. For the next 15 or 20 minutes or so in the second half both teams looked to take the lead with Howkins blasting just wide of the goal when clean through for the Rockets and James Welch making some fine saves in The Heavitree goal to keep Cullompton at bay.

As the half wore on Cullompton began to get on top and looked more likely to score the all important 3rd goal which eventually came courtesy of an unfortunate poor goal kick which went straight to a Cullompton player who blasted it back in the goal to give them the lead for the 1st time.

From here there was only going to be one winner and Cullompton scored a fourth goal after a well worked move and a late 5th after the keeper was put under pressure. James Welch produced some great saves throughout for Heavitree but the Rockets Man of the Match went to Dan Bennett who tackled brilliantly and produced some telling passes. His game continues to improve and he has become a key player for the Rockets.

Heavitree Rockets - Matchday Report

Improving Heavitree Rockets hit top form to climb to the heady heights of mid table.

Heavitree started brightly and took the initiative from the first whistle. A good passage of early pressure resulted in a fine strike from Sam Vittles finding the net in only the second minute. Sam's second goal in succesive matches was created by some fine passing down the wing between Nick Middleton and the returning Jack Moxey.

Jack Williams added a second goal from a scramble in the box to give Heavitree a 2 goal cushion. Bradninch started to grow in confidence and pulled a goal back after some hesitation in the home defence.

Any chance of a comeback was quickly dispelled by a fantastic solo goal from the outstanding Jack Williams who picked up the ball from deep inside his own half, beat a couple of players and pushed the ball through a gap in the defence. He then used his pace to outstrip the defenders and slot the ball home for an early contender for goal of the season. He then comleted his hat trick just before half time after a great assist from the impressive Zak Lee to make the score 4-1 at half time.

Williams added his fourth just after the restart with Zak Lee going close shortly after. Two further quick goals from Williams again and an excelent solo strike from Ben Howkins made the game safe.

Bradninch continued to battle hard and showed a great attitude throughout, deservedly getting a second goal just after the hour. By then Alan Needs had grabbed his first goal for the club after good work by the excellent Callum MacMartin and Williams added the icing on the cake to score a late 9th and to complete an unprecedented double hat trick after another unselfish delivery by Jack Moxey who along with Tom Scrivens, Daniel Bennett and Zak Lee had great games in defence.

Some excellent passing and movement from Heavitree and a great individual performance from

Man of the match Jack Williams.

Special mention to Bradninch who never gave up and acquited themselves well throughout

Sidmouth Town under 12s Raiders v Cullumpton Rangers 3-5

Both teams knew before kickoff that it would be a tight and exciting game and this proved to be so. Cullumpton scored first, 10 minutes into the game and Sidmouth didn't take long to equalise with a Dan Swain goal.

Sidmouth appeared then to be in panic mode with scrappy play not helping them, particularly when Cully took the lead and by half time the score was 3-1 to Cully. Both teams got stuck into the second half but Cullompton were the more determined side scoring another 2 goals. This spurred on Sidmouth who found energy and focus with Alec Larson-Carter running through from defence, taking it around the keeper then tapping it in.

With the clock ticking Matt Saunders scored the final goal of the game for the Raiders with an impressive cross or shot, the coaches weren't sure which but as the ball went in they didn't mind! The match produced some lovely football which was well supported by a good atmosphere with both team's parents making it an enjoyable morning for all.

Mark Pearse was awarded Parents man of the match as he was solid in defence, being a pivotal member of the team.

Sidmouth Town Under 12s Raiders v Bradninch 3-2

The game started off well for the Raiders with a pass put through by Matt Saunders which was finished off by Josh Worthington. The second goal was scored by Josh Edwards after the ball was nicely crossed by Josh W.

This was shortly followed by Matt again passing the ball through, this time being finished off by Dan Swain. Ellis Sage and Dan continued to have shots but none of which connected to the back of the net.

Bradninch started to make their comeback just before half time, making the score 3-1. They continued to battle well and went on to score again after the Raiders fumbled to clear the ball.

It was a close match as the score showed! Parents Man of the Match went to Dan Swain who constantly pushed forward to try and score. Thanks to Dec and Adrian whom helped officiate.

ROCKETS OVERCOME RESILIENT WEST HILL WASPS

HEAVITREE ROCKETS 4     WEST HILL WASPS 2
Heavitree Rockets got their first win of the season against their spirited opponents who battled bravely throughout and showed great determination despite only fielding 9 players. The Rockets soon made their numerical superiority count and played some much improved football after last weeks 8-0 humbling by Ottery St Mary.

They passed the ball around with more assurance and started to create some good chances. The West Hill keeper made some fine saves and West Hill were looking dangerous on the break spurning some good chances of their own. The Rockets opened the scoring with a Ben Howkins strike after a great run and cross by Jack Williams and it was Williams who added the second with a deflected shot which looped in at the far post.

Shortly after West Hill were reduced to 8 men after an injury and Heavitree started to apply more pressure with numerous chances going begging. Some inspired goalkeeping and the post kept Heavitree at bay until a fine Sam Vittles strike gave Heavitree a 3-0 half time lead.

A fourth goal early in the second half by Jack Williams gave a 4 goal lead to the Rockets but then West Hill battled back superbly. Playing with 9 men again they started to push players forward with the game opening up and chances being created at either end.

James Mattin scored for West Hill and added a penalty after a trip in the box. Some anxious moments ensued but Heavitree hung on to claim the points against the Wasps.

Full credit must go to West Hill for battling so hard with a weakened team and playing their part in an entertaining game

Heavitree Rockets Man of the Match : Sam Vittles. Showed great touch on the ball, tackled well and scored a great goal

Hemyock 4 Sidmouth Warriors 6

On a glorious Saturday these two teams gave everyone watching an exciting game. The first half was dominated by Sidmouth scoring three goals with no reply.

They were helped by some very poor defending from the Hemyock boys who were finding it very hard to adapt to the full size pitch. After some encouraging words from their coaches the Hemyock boys came out a different team with the passing and movement a joy to everyone watching. They scored very early with Jack Aldred finishing a great move.

The frailties at the back came back to haunt them with Sidmouth scoring another two but this seemed to inspire the boys as Ashley Jaji scored his first of the season and then Liam Travers rounding the keeper to make the score 5-3.

Sidmouth were not finished and a fine shot from the edge of the box made the score 6-3. Again Hemyock came back and Ashley scored another after good work from a short corner.

The final five minutes were played with no more scoring with the final score being 6-4. All the boys from both teams should be praised for the great game that was played.

Feniton 2 West Exe 3

Feniton suffered injury time heartbreak as they suffered their first defeat of the season at home to a battling West Exe side.  The game started with Feniton attacking the lower goal and having a number of good chances but the normally reliable attack were unable to convert the chances that came their way.

Feniton having failed to make the pressure count, West Exe punished them with a well crafted goal after 15 minutes.  A break up the left hand side saw the Feniton defence turned and a lovely lay off to Ryan Jackson allowed him to fire a shot from just inside the box into the far corner.  The rest of the first half was even and half time arrived with the scoreline 1-0 to West Exe.

Feniton started the second half in a positive mood and were rewarded when a break up the left saw Jack Lovegrove but a lovely square pass into Joe Titmuss's path for Joe to slot the equaliser neatly home.  Five minutes later Feniton took the lead when a corner broke to Sam Titmuss just outside the box on the right and he hit a screamer into the roof of the net.

West Exe wouldn't lie down and made Feniton pay for yet more spurned chances as they broke for Jack Pope to slot the ball over the despairing Scott Kelly in the Feniton goal and bring the scores level again.

As the full time bore down West Exe had a number of chances to net a winner but going into injury time it was still 2-2.  That is, until West Exe managed to breach the Feniton defence with two attackers, the first shot was parried by Kelly only for Jordan Brooks to squeeze home the winner from a tight angle.

Despite desparate efforts there was no time for Feniton to launch another attack and they went home empty handed.  Meanwhile West Exe move up to third in the league and continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Cullompton Rangers 3 - 2 Culm United 'Eagles'

Culm United succumbed to a 3-2 loss away to Cullompton Ranger's in their second fixture of the season in what every parent and child involved must surely be hailing as a true testomy to the brilliance and excitement of modern youth football.

Cullompton started on the front foot and 5 minutes in, gained a 1-0 advantage after continous pressure on the Culm's defence. Culm failed to settle and further struggled to gain any momentum in their play. Possibly against the run of play Daniel Marek grabbed an equaliser after a good corner from James Brown.

Open play then began and both teams attacked for fun. Culm took the first advantage, courtest of a smart strike from Cory Clench, though it didn't take Cullompton long to equalise easliy beating Culm's keeper at the near post from a tight angle. Culm's nerves failed to settle and Cullompton took advantage and the lead, finishing an exciting first half 3-2 to Cullompton's advantage.

Culm then showed great character and pressed hard for an equaliser, though Cullompton held well, limiting chances. It seemed as though the Eagles would struggle for the equaliser and Aiden Greenslade, though excellent in defence made way for a more attacking minded winger and the tables swung in Culm's favour, and Cullompton had to sustain long periods of pressure from the Eagles.

Daniel Marek, as always, worked hard from midfield and broke through to see his early shot go inches wide of the far post and a further goal mouth scramble for a 50/50 call for a 'did the ball cross the line' did not go in Culm's favour Though the equalise never come Culm still had to deal well with Cullompton's breaks.

The game finished 3-2 to Cullompton and courtesy was passed from both sides for what will always be an exciting local derby fixture. Huge praise to both teams for their passion, skill, commitment, and also the parents for their continued encouragment and support.

Sidmouth Warriors 2 Feniton 3

A sunny morning welcomed the new season for both teams and each started as though they hadn't had a break.  Feniton shaded the early exchanges but after 10 minutes Niall Waterhouse was on the end of  a cracking Sidmouth move to rifle home the first goal of the season.

Sidmouth came more and more into the game after their opening goal and were only prevented from scoring by some stout defending.  Half time arrived with the score still 1-0.   The second half started evenly but after just 5 minutes a defensive error after a fierce shot from George Peacock gifted a goal to Sidmouth.

As the heat began to tell on both teams the game opened up and Fenition were awarded a free kick on the halfway line.  Josh Tree played the ball forward, George Southall-Brown flicked it on for Tom Harrison to run clear and fire Feniton back into the game.  Five minutes later Josh Tree jinked his way through the Sidmouth defence to hit the equaliser.

With ten minutes remaining the game was end to end with both teams having chances until Josh Spray chased down a lost cause and won a corner for Feniton.

Josh Tree played it short to Tom Gurney who turned two defenders and shot low into the far corner to hit the winner.

Both teams played hard and fair and can surely look forward to a good season ahead.

Culm Eagles 7 - 0 Bradninch

Culm Eagles began their 09-10 Exeter youth League season with a convincing win at home to locals Bradninch.

The opening exchanges were testy as both teams battled for posession, however Culm soon started to create some decent chances and on the 20th minute James Brown scored his first of 3 for the morning.  Bradninch kept working hard but Culm's defence stood firm with good performances from Luke Horne, Aiden Greenslade, Aaron Yells and Daniel Conn.

The midfield Duo of Harry Jee and Daniel Marek was as impressive as ever and support interplay from Cory Clench and James Brown to the front men of Tyrone White and Will Horne was industrious and intelligent.   However Culm failed for most of the game to play the type of football capable, yet still managed to add a further 4 goals to the tally of 3 courtesy of Daniel Marek with a brace, and Luke and Will Horne adding their share.

The score line could have ended much higher however the post on a number of occasions and some good pressure from the bradninch defence did enough to keep Culm's tally at 7.

Daniel Marek showed how much of a powerhouse he can be in midfield, working from goal to goal, non stop and creating a number of chances for himself.  Will Horne, though only scoring 1 for himself was involved in almost every goal. and Cory Clench just showed how he keeps inproving with his intelligent passes and direct attacking style.

Though there is much to come from the Eagles it still made for an entertaining season opener and the boys are certainly enjoying their time playing 11v11 finally.  Well done to all involved.

Sidmouth Town Raiders 4 - 1 West Hill

It was a glorious start to the Raiders season as the boys pulled together to produce to comfortable win in the sunshine! Dan Swain scored first by a run through the defence then hammering the ball in the back of the net. This was followed shortly after by a repeat performance with Josh Edwards setting up the goal by flicking the ball on with a header to Dan who battled through before passing to Josh Worthington to finish it off making the score 3-0.

The sun was starting to take its toll on the boys and the second half was much more evenly matched. West Hill started having many more chances giving the Raiders keeper Toby Lee plenty of opportunities to make some excellent saves but they eventually managed to score with an impressive long range shot.

The exciting game came to an end with a wonderfully placed corner by Nathan Penhallurick. The coaches were extremely impressed with the commitment and energy of their newly formed team.

Parents man of the match was shared jointly between Josh Edwards and Toby Lee both of whom were fundamental members of the team, with a special mention to Oli Aplin who showed great sportsmanship.

Brixington Blues Matchday Report

Thursday 30 April 2009

Whipton Youth - 5    Brixington Blues - 3

Brixington's penultimate game of the season took place at Willowbrook School against high flying Whipton.   Blues took the lead early after some great passing moves and a well executed finish from Jordan Vine.  Ten minutes later and Brixington make it 0 - 2 with a superb move started by David Cockayne at left back using skill and controlled passing to set up another chance for Jordan Vine who made sure by firing passed the Whipton keeper.

Brixington had Whipton on the back foot for the majority of the first half even though they conceded late on.  1 - 2 to Blues.

The second half saw Blues continue with their usual good pass and move football but could do nothing about a long range strike from Whipton for the equaliser 2 - 2.   Whipton then scored again to take the lead with another well struck shot, this seemed to have Blues reeling, Whipton's fourth goal was a fortunate goal to say the least when an attempt at a cross into the Blues' box was seemingly cut out by a decent challenge only for it to deflect and dip beyond Blues' keeper, Callum McPhee, who tried his best to adjust but to no avail,

4 - 2 to Whipton.

A late resurgence from Brixington earned a free kick outside the Whipton area which Jordan Vine smashed home to give him a well deserved hat trick.  Blues looked to be back in it and full of confidence once more until Whipton ended it with another goal two minutes from time.

Team: Callum McPhee, Josh Whiller, Alex Szypillo, William Flinn, Ben Rowland, Harry Trick, Callum McClure, David Cockayne, Mike White, Joel Rendall, Josh Richards, Arnold Godbeer, Jordan Vine.

Saturday 9 May 2009

Alphington - 0   Brixington Blues - 6

The final match of the season for Brixington Blues saw them come away with the points after a superb display of football in all areas.

The defence showed why they are the best in the division; midfield provided accurate passing and strong tackling and the strikers certainly benefited from this.

The first half finished with Blues 2 - 0 up thanks to some great passing and running by Arnold Godbeer, Mike White, Ben Rowland, Joel Rendall and Harry Trick, and accurate finishing from Jordan Vine.

The second half saw much of the same as Jordan Vine grabbed two more goals, one of which was a stunning long-range free kick, the other was also a free kick but this time it was a deft chip over the wall and keeper.  Brixington Blues' captain Mike White scored with a lovely up and under which gave Alphington's goalkeeper no chance. The last goal came from the previous season's top scorer, David Cockayne, playing at left back who fired home from twenty yards with a wonderful strike.

Team:  Callum McPhee, Josh Whiller, Alex Szypillo, Will Flinn, David Cockayne, Callum McClure, Ben Rowland, Joel Rendall, Mike White, Harry Trick, Josh Richards, Jordan Vine and Arnold Godbeer

Brixington Blues - 2 Crediton Youth - 2

The first half started lively with both teams passing well and having equal share of the possession, Brixington had the first attempt on goal with a well struck shot from Jordan Vine which the Crediton keeper parried into the path of Joel Rendall who put his left foot strike just wide of the post.  Ten minutes gone, Crediton counter attack and take the lead after nipping between defender and goalkeeper, 1-0.

Some good football by Blues gave them a number of chances but could not capitalise until Arnold Godbeer was brought down in the Crediton penalty area, William Flinn stepped up to take it and duly scored giving the keeper no chance.

This gave Brixington the impetus they needed and put the pressure on Crediton with shots from Ben Rowland, Mike White, Joel Rendall and Jordan Vine to which the Crediton keeper matched with some good saves.  Ten minutes to go and Harry Trick wins the ball near the corner flag, cuts inside the oncoming defender then fires home from a near impossible angle, 2-1 to Brixington.

Blues looked to be cruising to a well deserved win with the defence stopping any Crediton attack until a break by the visitors ended in a goalmouth scramble which resulted in the equaliser with two minutes to go.    Final Score 2 - 2.

TEAM: Callum McPhee, Josh Whiller, Alex Szypillo, David Cockayne, Ben Rowland, Josh Richards, William Flinn, Callum McClure, Mike White, Joel Rendall, Jordan Vine, Arnold Godbeer and Harry Trick

Whipton 3 - 7 Westexe Athletic

Going into the game West Exe had belief of getting a result due to their performance when they meet a few weeks ago, leading by two goals for most of that game.

Again starting well West Exe took the lead thanks to Tom Stanbury, only to find themselves 2-1 down at half time.

Knowing they were still in the game West Exe  pressed on and took control of the game and more goals came from man of the match Jimmy Thorne Pen, Regan Isaccs, Elliot Pearce-Eavis 2, Sebastian Loram and an over head kick from Callum Goodwin. Whipton scored once more during the second half but could not match West Exe's performance.

NEWTON ST CYRES - 0 BRIXINGTON BLUES - 9

A wonderful playing surface was complimented by beautiful weather at Newton St Cyres, Brixington were clearly the stronger of the two sides having nearly all the possession in  this first half, shots reined in on the Newton goal which either went just wide or high, on one occasion each post was hit in quick succession. Then towards the end of the first half Jordan Vine got Blues on the score sheet with a well taken goal.  Half time and Blues lead by a single goal to nil.

Manager David Cockayne's team talk certainly did the job as Brixington Blues got their sights trained in on Newton's goal, Ollie Hughes-Hollomby made it 2 - 0 after being pushed up front, Jordan Vine made it 3 - 0 and then 4 - 0 with a great strike to achieve a well-deserved hat-trick.  Ollie then got his second after some persistent work in holding off Newton's defence.   Brixington's keeper Callum McPhee had very little to do all game but the centre halves in front of him enjoyed having a spell in midfield, Alex Szypillo  & Josh Whiller shining in their 10 minutes.   At 5 - 0 Blues were cruising, Joel Rendall,  Harry Trick, Josh Richards and William Flinn all putting in pinpoint passes which David Cockayne capitalised on with accuracy twice.   Jordan smashed home his fourth.

Skipper Mike White rounded it off with a perfect side strike into the top right hand corner.

Team:  Callum McPhee, Harry Trick, Josh Whiller, Callum McClure, Alex Szypillo, Josh Richards, William Flinn, Mike White, Joel Rendall, Jordan Vine, David Cockayne, Ollie Hughes-Hollamby

Scorers:  Vine - 4.  Hollomby - 2.  Cockayne - 2.   White - 1.

West Exe Athletic U12s - 2 Brixington Blues U12s - 2

Brixington Blues' skipper Mike White led from the front as Blues fought back from 2-0 down  to claim a 2-2 draw with West Exe.

On a bright but blustery morning West Exe took advantage of having the wind at their backs by netting twice and causing Blues defence a number of problems, Blues though could have opened the scoring first as Joel Rendall swept in a low cross from the left to Jordan Vine who put the ball just wide.  Then it was Joel Rendall's turn to be unlucky as his 20-yard shot into the wind that was dipping under the bar was well held by the West Exe keeper.  Right back Harry Trick cleared Brixington's lines on a number of occasions to keep Blues in the hunt.

The second half of this match was for the most part a scrappy, tough challenging affair until Brixington's captain marvel Mike White screamed for the ball to be left to him on the edge of the West Exe box and justified his shout by burying the ball into West Exe's net.

Now with the wind in their favour Brixington looked dangerous and duly delivered the equaliser in style, Jordan Vine received the ball on the half way line, ran 20 yards, nicked it passed the on-rushing keeper and showed great composure to fire home.   2 - 2.

The final minutes were all Brixingtons as the pressure was applied, but West Exe's defence were coping until Will Flinn beat the keeper only to see his shot come off the post in what was virtually the last kick of the game.

TEAM: Callum McPhee, Josh Whiller, Harry Trick, Will Flinn, Callum McClure, Ben Knight, Ben Rowland, David Cockayne, Joel Rendall, Ollie Hughes- Hollomby, Mike White, Arnold Godbeer, Jordan Vine.

Brixington Blues 3 - 0 West Exe Rangers

Brixington Blues ran out comfortable winners in this mid-table clash, which started with both teams playing at a fast pace.

The deadlock was broken after 10 minutes through some neat passing by Blues which Jordan Vine finished off by calmly slotting home.

This was the beginning of what turned out to be a wonderful display of football by Blues who kept possession with style and flair.

Jordan Vine could have doubled his tally and Brixington's lead after Mike White was tripped in the West Exe penalty area but put his spot kick just wide.  Arnold Godbeer was unlucky not to be on the score sheet after a number of great runs as was Ben Rowland.

The second half started with a bang as Harry Trick unleashed a screamer from 35 yards to put Blues 2-0 in front , the slick passing continued with William Flinn and Joel Rendall combining on the left resulting in a sublime top right hand corner finish by Mike White. This was a great display from the whole team, who put everything into ensuring Brixington took all three points.

TEAM:  David Cockayne, Alex Szypillo, Josh Whiller, Josh Richards, Callum McClure, Ben Rowland, Mike White, Harry Trick, Joel Rendall, William Flinn, Arnold Godbeer and Jordan Vine.

Crediton Youth 1 - 1 Brixington Blues

In a game which saw Brixington have the majority of possession not many chances to score fell to either side with a lot of the action being played in the middle of the park, Crediton had a great chance to go one nil up in the second half  but Blues throw in expert William (rory delap) Flinn raced in to clear off the line, Brixington had a few chances late on through Arnold Godbeer, Jordan Vine and Joel Rendall who's shot from twenty yards went just wide.  Harry Trick had a good game at centre half alongside Josh Whiller who was dependable and solid as usual.

Team: Callum McPhee, Ollie Hughes Hollomby, Ben Knight, Josh Whiller, Harry Trick, Josh Richards, Ben Rowlands, Callum McClure, David Cockayne, Mike White, William Flinn, Joel Rendall, Jordan Vine and Arnold Godbeer.

Brixington Blues 1 -1 Exwick

Exwick fought back with some good football but Brixington's defence were able to cope.   The second half started in the same vein as the first with both teams confident they could score, and the goal came from Exwick to make it 1-1,some outstanding tackles from Mike White in midfield stifled most Exwick breaks.

Brixington nearly had a second from a typically laser guided corner from Jordan Vine which David Cockayne headed inches wide, Blues keeper Callum McPhee pulled off a great save in the final minutes to keep the score 1-1, an entertaining match and a fair result.

Brixington Blues U12s: Callum McPhee, Josh Whiller, Harry Trick, Alex Szypillo, Ben Knight, William Flinn, Ollie Hughes-Hollomby, Mike White, Josh Richards, David Cockayne, Joel Rendall, Jordan Vine, Arnold Godbeer.

WHIPTON WIN TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH

WHIPTON 6 EXWICK 1

This was a match between the only two unbeaten teams in the second division. It was Exwick who started the brighter of the two teams. But for some great defending and some poor finishing Exwick could have took the lead. But on ten minutes it was Whipton who scored first. Its fair to say the goal came against the run of play.

Whipton broke quickly out of defence and when the ball was put through to Marcus he cooly finished to put Whipton one goal up. Whipton were now showing why they are top of the league and on seventeen minutes Marcus got his and Whiptons second.Exwick nearly hit straight back but their striker saw his shot hit the bar. On twenty five minutes a great pass from Callum put Marcus in to complete his hat trick. There were no more goals in the first half.Jake scored Whiptons fourth early on in the second half.

Exwick continued to try and get back in the game. And on fifty five minutes they got the goal they were looking for. But their joy was short lived as Whipton went up the other end and Matthew made it 5-1. With time running out Marcus scored his fourth and Whiptons sixth. Both teams played well but it was Whipton who took their chances. If Exwick had made the most of their early pressure it might have been a different game.

Blue - High 5!!

Brixington Blues put on an inspired team performance to take the points in an eventful encounter with Newton St Cyres.

Blues ended the first half 2-0 up with goals from Arnold Godbeer and Joel Rendall after some terrific play from Jordan Vine, David Cockayne, Mike White but especially Harry Trick who created havoc for Newton with his wing play and crosses.

Brixington upped the tempo in the second half even more with Ollie Hughes-Hollomby firing home from close range, Jordan Vine finding Joel Rendall on the edge of the area who stuck a fantastic shot that went straight in the top right hand corner.

Goal of the game was an unstoppable 30-yard strike from Alex Szypillo which gave the Newton keeper no chance.Blues were unlucky not to have won by more with Arnold Godbeer, Jordan Vine and David Cockayne all having decisions go against them and Joel Rendall missing out on a hat trick by inches after a great run. Great defending, great attacking, a convincing win. 5-0.

WHIPTON MARCH ON AT THE TOP

This was always going to be a tough game for Newton St Cyres against top of the table Whipton.

Newton battled well and their goalkeeper pulled of several great saves to keep Whipton at bay. Whipton finally broke the deadlock when Matthew broke through to make it 1-0.Scott soon made it 2-0. The score would have been higher but for some good goalkeeping from the Newton keeper.

On twenty three minutes Marcus made it 3-0. Two minutes later he made it 4-0. He then completed his hat trick to make the score 5-0. Scott and Jake got on the score sheet to make the half time score 7-0.

The second half was very much the same.Whipton scored three more goals. Their scorers were Leon,Matthew and Jake. There was even time for Newton to break away and score a goal of their own.

Great credit to the Newton St Cyres players who kept on battling against a very good Whipton team.

WESTEXE ATHLETIC 1 WESTEXE RANGERS 0

After weeks of pre match build up this was a game not to be missed.

Athletic produced an outstanding display in all areas of the field with Rangers causing the odd problem, Athletics back four were consistent, strong and made it impossible for Rangers to break through.

The strikers continually attacked the Rangers box but couldnt find the back of the net. The second half started much the same with Athletic playing quick passing football.

On 40 minutes Callum Goodwin broke the deadlock with an outstanding goal from the right wing. To sum up, a truly outstanding performance from all 11 Athletic lads who showed great team spirit and ultimately they proved to strong and earned a good 3 points for their sterling efforts.

A special thank you to Gary Parsons who referred the game superbly.

Heavitree Rockets 2 - 2 Countess Wear Dynamoes

A well fought match on a difficult pitch ended with a share of the points on the coldest morning of the year so far.

Both teams found it difficult to play good passing football on this pitch (something which the dynamoe's have been doing to the highest level recently).

The rockets piled the pressure on for long periods during the first half but the dynamoe's defence remained solid.

The dynamoe's defence switched off for a moment and the rockets to full advantage, finding a spare man at the rear post who had a easy shot to make it 1 up to the rockets. The dynamoe's had a few chances during the first half but never really tested the rockets keeper. The second half saw the visitors take control of the match, they were playing the best football possible on this pitch and they were soon rewarded with a goal from Leon Davis who hammered a left foot drive home after a great ball in from Nathan Antat.

Dynamoe's kept the pressure on and were having most of the play, limiting the rockets to the odd breakaway that the dynamoe's defenders easily delt with. A mistake by the rockets from a goal kick gave the ball to Nathan Antat about 30 yards out, he took a touch looked up and lofted the ball over the defenders and keeper just dipping it below the crossbar.

With the dynamoe's in the lead they looked comfortable but a strange moment from the ref (ref ended up walking off without any valid reason) saw the match held up for a few mins whilst the rockets sorted a replacement. When the game restarted the rockets had more of the play and won themselves a free kick on the edge of the dynamoe's box. The free kick was inch perfect and clipped the inside of the post in the top corner, (pretty much unstoppable).

Dynamoe's had the better of the remaining chances but were unable to take them. The match finished 2-2 and the dynamoe's (feeling disappointed with this result)will put that down to missed chances rather than level of play from the other team.
