Old Reports - Under 13s (Division 2) |
U13 Div2 Culm United 6 Exwick Youth 1Culm's final league game of the season and their last under the current name, was as Division 2 champions after Thursday's victory, so it would important that they sign off with good football and hopefully, another clean sheet. The rains that threatened held off until after the final whistle and otherwise the surface was good to firm! The game kicked off with Culm starting brightly - the team still lacking their injured goalkeeper, and both full-backs. So Macaulay Broome led the line and he had a good day!! Their shape was disciplined and they passed the ball across midfield to the wide boys (!!) and the first chance fell to Ross Oaten who found, as has been the case recently, the opposition goalkeeper alert and on good form. He was quick to react throughout the game and often acted as a sweeper for Exwick. However, after 7', a controlled lofted pass from Josh Hart bounced over the visitor's rearguard and into the path of Macca who finished well. Culm were on the offensive and had three more good chances including two more for Macca, one of which was well saved. At the back, though, an uncharacteristic error led to an equaliser and the first goal against Culm in 4 games. Shielding an over-hit pass, Hart and Tucker got into a tangle and the Exwick forward's gamble paid off and he finished well - 1-1. Culm pressed forward and Macca soon got his second after being fed in by Oaten. He rounded the ‘keeper and rolled the ball over the line. Some good corners came in from the right - all of which begged for a brave head and a likely goal and then Macca, desperate for his hat-trick rattled the bar with a shot that bounced to safety off the line. At the other end, Exwick put the Culm defence under some pressure with a couple of very well placed corners and a free-kick, which were well dealt with by stand-in ‘keeper, Tucker. Halftime, 2-1 to Culm. Into the second half and Culm stated well again but the Exwick defence were ready to mop up the over-hit passes. Daniel hayfield was playing well and trying to pick the defence open with lofted passes and deft chips. He started the move that included a pass out to the wing where Timmy Miles pulled the ball back to Oaten who controlled and shot sweetly for 3-1. It was his 35th of the season and he's managed to score in every game he's played this term for Culm. At the other end, Tucker had a strong shot to hold but otherwise, Culm benefitted from his accurate and well-hit goal-kicks. Towards the end, a Hayfield pass isolated the ‘keeper who decided to come for a clearance towards the top left of his area. Oaten's shot was blocked but Macca ran for and collected the ball by the goal line at the far post and then curled it beyond 2 defenders into the far side netting for 5-1. In the final minute, Joe Brooks' was brought down as he controlled a ball near the penalty-spot and he took the resultant kick low into the right corner for 6-1. Anyone who knows Joe will understand how much this goal was deserved and it's a fitting way for Culm to sign off the league season. Very well played to Will Gorman and Aron Carpenter but especially to Noah Wright, at left back, who really was everywhere today. West Exe 0 Culm United Youth 3Needing a win to secure the Division 2 title, Culm hosted this tie because of Exeter City Council's no-midweek-play policy for junior football. It was therefore good to see West Exe make the trip with 2 subs, although without Neil, their manager. The weather had broken in the previous 48 hours and the surface was taking a stud. There was a light rain to deal with and a little gloom - but hey, there's a football game about to be played and all the boys were up for it - wonderful how a football and a patch of grass can lighten the mood. (White-lines and referee are extras!!). The surface was a little slippery and as Culm made the early running, it was clear that West Exe weren't here to make up numbers. In defence especially in the first 10', they were keen to stifle the hosts penetrative play. In truth, despite West Exe's good defensive play, Culm have played better this term - expectations were high and although they weren't playing badly, often a lack of concentration spoiled a good build-up. Then Culm did take the lead, after 17', when Timmy Miles wriggled past the West Exe left back and put a delightful cross onto the penalty spot where Will Gorman guided a controlled-volley beyond the West Exe ‘keeper's left hand. The lead was doubled 4' later when Ashley Grant came short to take a pass. He turned and fed a pass into Ross Oaten's path and he too despatched a low shot past the ‘keeper's left hand - 2-0. It may have been reward for some promising play but this game was far from over and some complacency and reduced effort was going in. West Exe kept battling and started to see more of the game in Culm's half. They loaded the midfield, ready to counter-attack and came close to replying twice before halftime. Once the manager's son, Jordan went close - with a deft clip from the edge of the penalty area which glanced off the crossbar, with the Culm ‘keeper, Ben Tucker, beaten. A free-kick shortly after from the same angle was not contested by Culm and the low shot went narrowly wide of Tucker's right hand post. Into the second half, and Culm started brightly, once again. This time Culm created a number of chances and were unfortunate not to score more than the additional goal they got. Macca Broome put Daniel Hayfield into the far right corner of the box and he jinked and turned three defenders before finding the inside netting high beyond the ‘keepers right hand, for 3-0. It was an exceptional goal to end the scoring with. There were quite a few more chances for the home team and the visitors came close twice, from their best player on the left wing. The first time his shot flashed across the face of Tucker's goal and the second time, he was brilliantly beaten to a bouncing lowish cross by the excellent Sam Stockman. At the other end, a Timmy Miles cross-cum-shot veered to safety off the cross bar and 2 speculative Oaten efforts went narrowly wide. So promoted as champions in a game they never really hit top gear in BUT full credit to West Exe and especially their goalkeeper who has clearly benefitted from the Monday night training sessions at Devon Centre of Excellence - good hands and fine decision-making. Well played to Josh hart, Aron Carpenter and Stockman. U13s Div 2 Culm United 4 Crediton Youth 0Having been around four minutes from inflicting defeat on Culm last week, Crediton Youth's tails were up and they duly arrived in good time for a match on an excellent surface and under a warming spring sun. Last week, Culm were torn asunder down the flanks and yet still managed to come back from 2-4 down. This time they may well need more than energy and passion but they would also have 2 important players back - and in defence! After the game had settled down and without any direct chances on goal, Crediton then came close on three occasions from balls whipped in early from the right. The third of these crosses brought a fine strike from the opposite winger, but the big hands of Culm's stand-in ‘keeper, Ben Tucker were sure, though, as indeed they were all match. At the other end, Culm looked promising but still hadn't tested the visiting ‘keeper, largely due to Crediton's rearguard which was well organised and well marshalled. At the back for Culm, Josh Hart had organised his rearguard and the threatening low, early crosses were less frequent and usually cut out. However, it was some of the finest flank play Culm has seen in recent seasons but one of the areas of improvement the coaches have noted this term has been for the team and certain individuals within it, to make changes and decisions which affect their game or shape. Towards the end of the first half, Culm did get close down the right flank as they began to make the most of the possession - but still no direct shots on goal! Into the second half and Culm were immediately on the front foot and after 41', they took the lead. Macca Broome chipped a delightful pass over the visitor's right back from Timmy Miles to run onto. He judged the bouncing ball well and tipped the ball around and over the advancing ‘keeper for 1-0. Probably not absolutely deserved on the balance of play except that it came from some excellent inter-play to get the ball from defence to midfield and then into a shooting position. The goal gave Culm some belief as they began to play with a little more confidence although this was tested when another good move resulted in a Miles cross to the far post where Ashley Grant turned up on cue to head home, only to have the goal ruled out for offside. Three minutes later, though, Culm had scored again and Grant it was who ran onto a Ross Oaten pass to coolly slot home, just to the ‘keepers left. Crediton weren't backing down though and their defensive resilience was holding as Culm started to cause problems. Having been at the mercy of excellent flank play from Crediton last week and today, it was interesting to note that Culm's right flank was now proving to be Crediton's undoing and the next goal again came from this direction. The ebullient Oaten on this occasion was on hand to nod the ball home, 3-0. The fourth Culm goal again came from flank play on the right as from another low cross from Timmy Miles Oaten converted again as he ran clear into the area. There were chances to extend the lead and while 4-0 might seem a tad harsh on the visitors, Culm will take a lot more from this match and the recent run of fixtures in terms of their long term development. Well played to Crediton Youth - there's lots of promise in the team. Very well done to the referee, Will Thornton and to the boys on both teams who really did give 100% today. Well done to Crediton who posed some serious concerns in the Culm ranks - but I think we'll learn quickly from them and adapt our play. Well played to Macca Broome, who was quick to respond, sharp and tough to beat and who has the heart of a lion. Brixington Blues u13s - 7 v West Exe Rangers u13s - 0Brixington Blues played host to West Exe Rangers at the Exmouth Archery Club for what was their second meeting in a week , and it was Brixington who took the points once more in a 7 - 0 win that kept the pressure on leaders Culm. A glorious hat trick for Arnold Godbeer , a terrific brace for Callum (the Hitman) McPhee and one each for Sam Warren and Blues captain Mike White rounded off a thoroughly convincing win for Brixington. TEAM: Alex Szypillo, Josh Whiller, Ollie Dawe, Will Flinn, Harry Trick, Ben Rowland, Mike White, Joel Rendall, Lewis Wartnaby, Sam Warren, Jordan Vine, Callum McClure, Arnold Godbeer, Callum McPhee, Chris Wright. Culm United 5 Twyford 0At last, the match that had been eagerly awaited for weeks, not least because so many players go to the same school but because both teams have set the pace in the division for so long. The pitch was in excellent condition as the sun began to wind down after another beautiful day in the country, when the whistle blew to start the game. Culm defending the River End cheered on by a bumper crowd of around 100, were determined to start well and did so. After 6', a Timmy Miles corner to the near post was narrowly missed by striker Ashley Grant but just 3 minutes later, he got it right in identical circumstances and headed home to great celebration. Culm were clearly up for the game and were first to the ball on most occasions. Twyford were resolute in defence but insodoing, they rarely got forward enough to trouble the Culm rearguard. The game settled a little and became scrappy as both teams huffed and puffed. The moment any player tried to get the ball down to play, he needed to be moving as he was otherwise closed down and his options snuffed out. The more likely team to score next was Culm and so it proved. A goal kick from Twyford's ‘keeper was headed contested and when the ball dropped back into the centre circle, Macaulay Broome lofted a fine pass to Grant who controlled and laid the ball into the path of the yellow-booted Ross Oaten. He dropped his shoulder and moved into the penalty area before driving a fierce shot past the ‘keepers left hand and Culm had a 2-0 lead. Twyford did break though on the right late on in the half but the final shot was adrift of Ben Tucker's right post. The second half began and the visitors exerted some pressure with the first few exchanges but by the 48th minute (13' into the new half), the game was effectively over as Culm scored twice. First - Daniel Hayfield was set free by Oaten after more good work by Broome and he cleverly lobbed the ball over the advancing goalkeeper for 3-0. Then Oaten collected a loose ball some 30 yards from goal before volleying a superb shot into the top corner, and how he smiled. Twyford did pose a threat as they began to build some possession in Culm's defensive left-third but Josh Hart and Aron Carpenter renewed partnership was impenetrable. Culm looked increasingly dangerous going forward and with a little more composure may have added more before Oaten sealed his hat-trick when he interchanged with Grant and then fired home form 15 yards past the ‘keeper s right hand, on 58'. So, 5-0 and while deserved, after the last 2 below-par performances, the Culm boys produced a fine response in terms of discipline and sheer effort and determination. Credit to all the players, none of whom had an average game. The standard has been set for the rest of the season. Get well soon to Harry Martin, who broke his wrist last Sunday and to Rory Thomas who limped off the pitch with a badly bruised foot. Very well played to Will Gorman and Sam Stockman. Well refereed by Jim Cooper, who was aware of the close rivalry and the passion felt by all players. SATURDAY 17 APRIL 2010 - West Exe 2 - Brixington Blues 6Brixington Blues travelled to West Exe Rangers full of confidence after last week's beating of Culm Utd. It seemed though that the boys had forgotten to pack their shooting boots as chance upon chance fell to Brixington and none were converted. David Cockayne in particular could have had his name on the score sheet on any number of occasions especially in the first half hour. West Exe scored first on 18m, Brixington levelled through Sam Warren who managed to squeeze his shot through the melee. 1 - 1. With half-time fast approaching it's time for Arnold Godbeer to get a run out and quickly latches on to a pass and fires in to the net 1 - 2 Second half starts brightly for West Exe and soon get their 2nd with well taken 25-yarder that gave Alex Szypillo no chance. Brixington though had more goals in them Chris Wright's goal bound shot just taking a nick off a defender but would have hit the back of the net anyway. Next it was Arnold Goodbeer to make 4 for Bues. 2 - 4 and to grab his second and Blues 4th. Brixington's next goal was all about one man, Sam Warren who collected the ball from his own half ran like the wind passed one defender passed another and slotted home near post. 2 - 5. Brixington Blues' last goal came through a Joel Rendall corner that found Mike White who rose well to out jump the West Exe defence and expertly nod home. 2 - 6. Manager: David Cockayne Team: Alex Szypillo, Will Flinn, Callum McClure, Ben Rowland, David Cockayne, Callum McPhee, Lewis Wartnaby, Ollie Dawe, Harry Trick, Chris Wright, Mike White(captain), Joel Rendall, Arnold Godbeer, Sam Warren. Under 8's Manager RequiredWest Exe are looking for an under 8 manager for next season. All enquiries to Sarah Short on 01392 435159 (evenings). Crediton Youth 4 Culm United Youth 4Having played so many games this season on very wet, soft pitches, it looks like the run-in will be on quite the opposite. On a good pitch and under a hot sun, the game got under way with 2 of Culm's players unable to return due to the volcanic ash problem and one in Huddersfield! Culm started quite well but their attempts at intricate passing contrasted badly with Crediton's first attack. They built up play down the right flank where a great cross to the far post, some 12 yards out was despatched emphatically to give the hosts the advantage, on 6'. Culm were level on 12', when Macaulay Broome's chip on the angle over the home defence was controlled by Timmy Miles who volleyed home from 8 yards. As they huffed and puffed to get back in the game, Crediton went ahead again, following indecision in Culm's defence. Crediton always looked dangerous on the break against Culm's makeshift defence but halftime came with a few more chances, but 2-1 to Crediton. The second half opened with Culm keen to take a hold of the game. 25 yards out, and Daniel hayfield clipped a delightful goal into the far left top corner, with the keeper stranded. But Crediton responded and how. They retook the lead when the left winger burst through onto a ball over the top and finished with aplomb. After 50', it was 4-2 and Culm were struggling at the back - same protagonist, who squared for a simple tap-in. Changes were made at the back and then Culm set about reducing the deficit. A point would be a good outcome and Ross Oaten, found his way through both centrebacks to angle a low drive into the far left hand corner for a good goal. Culm looked secure at the back with Macca leading the line while the visitors' strikers searched for a way through the excellent Crediton defence. The equaliser came with just 2 minutes left to lay - Daniel Hayfield wriggling through the last defenders to score low. 4-4!! Very well done to Crediton's goalkeeper, and their defence in general. They also played well on the break and there were some good finishes. As for Culm, Broome was excellent today and for the rest of the team, there were a number of coaching points raised which will be worked on over the next few weeks!! Nevertheless, excellent spirit and determination by all the Culm players who worked harder and harder to get some reward, which they duly earned and thoroughly deserved. Brixington Blues - 5 Culm Utd - 4Brixington Blues took the points and ended Culm Utd's unbeaten run in a nine goal thriller at the Exmouth Archery Club. Blues took the lead early on with a well-directed header from Joel Rendall, Culm were soon back in it though and levelled the score with a shot that squeezed through the legs of Brixington keeper Alex Szypillo. Culm then took the lead with a well taken shot, 2 - 1, this was cancelled out though by a Sam Warren goal for Blues that sent the teams into half time at 2 - 2. After an inspirational half-time team talk by Blues' Manager, Dave Cockayne, Brixington upped their game and raced into a 4 - 2 lead with goals coming from Joel Rendall and David Cockayne which looked to have killed the game off - Culm though had other ideas and drew level with two goals in a quick succession, 4 - 4. With barely a minute left on the clock Blues were looking for the winner and found it courtesy of the Manager's son David Cockayne who capped a great performance by smashing home to secure the win. A great game to watch with some good football played by both teams. Team: Alex Szypillo, William Flinn, Ollie Dawe (captain), David Cockayne, Harry Trick, Ben Rowland, Sam Warren, Josh Whiller, Chris Wright, Jordan Vine, Lewis Wartnaby, Joel Rendall. Brixington 5 Culm United 4Culm United's 100% record was ended at The Archery Club after an enthralling encounter with Brixington, on a good but rutted surface and in very warm conditions. The visitors travelled without Josh Hart and Michael Winter in central defence but were otherwise at full strength. Neverhteless, they took a while to get into their stride and during this time, having seen one Brixington effort go narrowly wide from 6 yards, they conceded another a few minutes later. A corner from their left, after 12', reached the edge of the 6 yard area at the far post and was expertly headed back beyond Harry Martin's despairing dive, just going over the line. This woke Culm up, and they upped their work-rate to combat the hosts midfield drive. It paid dividends as they began to spring the home defence and the mischievous Ross Oaten ran onto a fine Daniel Hayfield pass to strike the ball beyond the Brixington ‘keeper for the equaliser on 15'. On 20' it was 2-1, when again having gotten behind the home defence, Oaten with his back to goal, rolled the ball back to Macaulay Broome to score from 18 yards with a good strike. Culm looked to be in the ascendancy but there was a general malaise about much of their play, a sluggishness which would cause problems all match. This didn't stop Oaten getting on the end of a few more chances, which he ultimately failed to get on target. Nevertheless, a late freekick given away 25 yards from goal was well struck by David Cockayne junior over Martin's head for Brixington's equaliser - 2-2. The second half started with Brixington in more determined mood and from the start, Culm were very much on the back foot. Within 10' of the restart, Brixington had a two goal advantage and the reason was the armour-piercing Sam Warren on the right flank who was a worthy match winner for the hosts. Despite the fact that Brixington's play was generally composed in the attacking third, Warren was the only player capable of getting through the Culm rearguard and when he did he looked to provide a scoring chance, which he did on 40' from the by-line. On 45', Warren himself burst through a challenge and sidestepped Martin's challenge before slotting home for 4-2. Once again, though Culm awoke and Oaten was through again and his pressure forced the home goalkeeper into an error, and he scored from 2 yards. His hat trick and Culm's second equaliser of the match was probably goal of the game. Having been released down the left, he cut into the area and then opened his body up to curl a shot with his right foot around the goalkeeper - 4-4. Warren was still terrorising the Culm left flank, while Oaten was always dangerous. Once again he cut through to run at goal but a challenge that was more clumsy than cynical brought him crashing down with just the ‘keeper to beat. In the interests of the game, the referee just awarded a free-kick which the home goalkeeper held well. At the other end, an offside flag ruled out a Brixington goal as both teams went for the winner. Both goalkeepers were called into action, although Oaten flashed two great chances over the bar when well placed. Into stoppage time and a corner from Culm's right was not properly dealt with and a scramble ensued. The first chance came to Warren whose point-blank shot was parried well by Martin. Again a missed chance to clear and the ball rolled to the far post where despite a hint of offside, Cockayne Junior won the game and the points for Brixington. From the restart, Culm did try but to no avail and it was good that the game had a winner. Culm will learn a lot from the match, which should serve them well in the weeks to come. Well played to Ben Tucker and Aron Carpenter and well played to the referee. Pinhoe Spartans 1 Culm United Youth 8After a week of rain and with the weathermen even forecasting a return of the snow, it was a blessed relief not to get that call, so it was game on!! The only downside was the length of the grass all over the pitch but that was far from the fault of our hosts. Nevertheless, a pretty game was probably ruled out. Culm started towards the Swinging-Bridge Road End and took the game to Pinhoe for most of the 35' half. Early on Culm did try to probe the flanks but they found the home defence quite resilient and when the forwards got in-behind, the ‘keeper was in athletic form too. The grass didn't help the bounce in key areas but after 9' the visitors took the lead when Daniel Hayfield collected a ball from Ross Oaten before slotting home. Five minutes later, Pinhoe heads dropped momentarily when Oaten unselfishly squared across the 7 yard area and beyond the ‘keeper for Macaulay Broome to roll the ball in. Culm's three-goal lead was deserved but had a large slice of luck when Rory Thomas' relatively tame shot from 18 yards took a wicked bounce as the ‘keeper went to collect the ball, instead it went over his hands and left shoulder. As the half wore on, Pinhoe got closer to a chance although the nearest came when following a corner, a loose ball was about to be struck and stand-in ‘keeper, Ben Tucker bravely dived in amongst the feet to smother it. The half had been hard work with 3 goals the return on a much higher number of chances and openings. The second half, with Culm defending Swing-Bridge Road End, saw almost a role reversal in early possession, with Pinhoe playing well around the penalty area. In truth Culm's defence was dogged and persevering and any openings were contested and usually dealt with. Josh Hart is commanding and developing a maturity and ability to read the game. His partnership with Aron Carpenter this season has been very good and improving all the time. When Culm got the ball down and passed, they found the best space on the flanks although it meant playing uphill and contesting with the longest of the grass, too. The effervescent Oaten finally got on the score sheet with a good strikers goal (for 4-0) and just afterwards, really clouted the far right post with a curling signature strike that had the keeper beaten all-ends-up. Culm gradually got back into their stride and after 3 quick-fire substitutions, they started to score again. Noah Wright's first touch was a terrific near-post header from a Hayfield corner and then Will Gorman collected a perfectly weighted Oaten pass to rifle home on the run from 15 yards. Pinhoe gave their supporters a chance to cheer with a well taken goal high into the net after a corner and was fair if only to reflect their efforts in the second half. But Culm signed off with two more from Daniel Hayfield, who sealed his fourth hat-trick of the season, for an 8-1 result. Very well played to Michael Winter, the busy Cameron Wright and get well soon to Harry Martin!! Culm United Youth 7 West Exe Rangers 2The rain of the previous 36 hours had threatened this fixture but on the day, the surface was as ideal for football as it must surely ever have been - and reasonably warm too!! West Exe started brightly and had the first shot which Harry Martin had to parry at full length, low, around his left post for a corner. Danger over for the time-being, Culm started to play very well, using the flanks and playing from the back. After one or two slightly over hit through balls, Macaulay Broome put the hosts ahead after 4', following a pass from Daniel hayfield which split the defence. Broome, coolly waited for the ‘keeper to commit before finding the far corner. By the 15th minute, Culm had scored 3 more times - the move of the game being the basis for the second. Centre-half Aron Carpenter played the ball to the left back, Cameron Wright who made ground down the touchline before swerving a wonderful pass with the outside of his boot into the path of Rory Thomas. In turn he skimmed past his marker and near the goal line, cut into the box and delivered a pass which Broome gleefully swept in. Ross Oaten fired a wonderful shot from 20 yards high into the net before Broome bundled in his hat-trick at the far post, following good work by Timmy Miles on the right flank. The 15th minute was potentially pivotal to the game. Cameron Wright limped off injured and sensing more goals, perhaps, Culm lost their shape. Chances came and went and the score remained until full-time. The second half started well for Culm but try as he might, the excellent Hayfield could not score, from 2 more good chances. Suddenly, West Exe began to find some hope. Urged on by their supporters, the defiant pressing and tackling had earned them some space behind Culm's midfield and then they started to find good passes. After 45', the visitors pulled a goal back despite a brave at-the-feet block from Martin. Three minutes later, they'd doubled their score with a fine finish from the coach's son. Some say football is all about decisions and when young players make them, the future is bright. Broome made a tactical change and switched back into midfield, where he was able to better influence possession and it showed immediately. Culm's right flank proved a dangerous route to goal and so it proved again and Hayfield from 10 yards, swept home a good goal from a Miles pull-back. Oaten then headed over the stranded visitors ‘keeper form 6-2 and Hayfield fittingly rounded off the scoring action with a mazy dribble around 3 players in the 6 yard box before rolling the ball over the line. Well done to West Exe, whose heads never dropped and whose ‘keeper is yet another good one we have seen this season. For Culm, Sam Stockman excelled on his return and Michael Winter and Noah Wright played very well. Culm United Youth 9 Broadclyst 0With the weather at last looking like there might be a chance to play on consecutive weekends to the end of the season, Culm took to the field with one or two positional changes. Any concerns about a slow start by the hosts were vapourised after the second attack and from Daniel Hayfield's through ball, Ross Oaten got the scoring under way with just 90 seconds played. The hosts came close again from corners, mainly from the right. Shortly afterwards, Hayfield opened his account, moving to find space and then slotting home. Hayfield added a third with a clinical finish after 24' and Oaten doubled his tally on 27'. However, his hat-trick was something special - collecting the ball wide on the right he advanced towards the angle of the penalty area and let fly with a super shot that went in off the far angle. Although Broadclyst didn't rouble Culm's defence much, this was largely down to excellent decision-making by Josh Hart and his defence. In addition, special mention to a full-length save by the visitors ‘keeper who tipped a well driven shot around his right-hand post. Five minutes into the second half and Culm had scored 3 more - Hayfield doubling hs personal tally to 4, as substitute Will Gorman scored with nearly his first touch. So Culm made changes and the incoming players did well from front to rear. Special mention to Broome who played the whole game and whose work-rate has improved tremendously. He got on the score-sheet with a last gasp strike from an acute angle but another memorable strike from close range saw the brave ‘keeper once again, not only block the ball with his midriff but also hold on. We have seen some very promising ‘keepers this season! So a very good all-round team performance conducted by Daniel Hayfield and ably supported Ross Oaten and Macca Broome. Very good displays by Michael Winter and Aron Carpenter Brixington Blues 14 - Pinhoe - 0On a perfect morning for football and the pitches thawing out in time Brixington played some of the most entertaining football of the season. Special mention to the back four who resolutely stifled any attacks from Pinhoe Ollie Dawes, Harry Trick, Will Flinn, Ben Rowland, and keeper Alex Szypillo. The fourteenth goal added just before full time was a 2-yard special from Harry Trick rounding off a great morning for the Blues. The Pinhoe players should also be mentioned for never once dropping their heads and trying to play football at all times - a credit to themselves and their coach. TEAM: Alex Szypillo, Ollie Dawe, Josh Whiller, William Flinn, Harry Trick, Callum McPhee, Ben Rowland, Mike White (capt), Chris Wright, Joel Rendall, Jordan Vine, Sam Warren and Lewis Wartnaby. Culm United Youth 8 Beacon Knights 2Culm played their first match at home for two months on a surface which was firm to soft but in a wind which became positively Siberian by the final whistle. Well done to the boys on both sides for a good game and to referee Will Thornton. The opening exchanges promised a passing game as Beacon Knights probed the Culm back-line. But Culm's swifter passing and movement earned then a corner on the left after 5 minutes. Daniel Hayfield's first attempt was returned to him by the fast improving Will Gorman, and his next near-post cross went in off the visitors ‘keeper. A corner form the other side and Hayfield jinked to find a better shooting opportunity and did in style with a rasping shot that hit the top far corner. Culm were playing well and Ross Oaten got in on the scoring act and near halftime, Cameron Wright scored the hosts 4th at the far post. Into the second period and Culm made a number of changes, so that all 5 substitutes had a good run-out. Having missed a gilt-edged chance with his very first touch, Ben Tucker made no mistake from 15 yards with a first time strike on the half-volley using his left foot!! Beacon Knights got one back with a speculative shot from 25 yards that Harry Martin could do nothing about before Oaten finished off another fine passing move for 6-1.Hayfield wriggled through for a fine individual goal. Goal of the game went to Ross Oaten for a stunning low free-kick from 20 yards and at the death, Knights got another that Martin could do nothing about again. The passing was a joy to watch at times and the number of chances created. Josh Hart was in commanding form at the back, while Michael Winter gave another impressive, trademark performance. Credit to Beacon Knights, for whom the goalkeeper played well with a number of other players but on the day, all the Culm players contributed to another excellent team performance and win. Brixington Blues - 6 Exwick - 0.A hat trick for Chris Wright and one-a-piece for Mike White, Joel Rendall and Sam Warren gave Brixington Blues the points amidst bitter weather conditions against visitors Exwick in what turned out to be a convincing win for the Blues at The Archery Club. Will Flinn and Blues' skipper Mike White were at the heart of most of Brixington's consistent attacking football, spraying passes which cut through the Exwick defense on a regular occurrence. Any Exwick attack was soon stifled by Blues' back four, in particular Josh Whiller leading by example with an outstanding performance. Brixington goalkeeper, Alex Szypillo, was rarely called upon but when needed was confident and assured in his clearances. TEAM: Alex Szypillo, Harry Trick, Ollie Dawe, Josh Whiller, Will Flinn, Callum McClure, Chris Wright, Mike White, Callum McPhee, Ben Rowland, Joel Rendall, Sam Warren, Arnold Godbeer and Lewis Wartnaby.
U13s Cup - Brixington 1 v 2 West Exe AthleticSATURDAY 6 FEBRUARY BRIXINGTON BLUES - 1 v WEST EXE ATHLETIC - 2 Brixington Blues exited the league cup after their match against West Exe Athletic ended 2 - 1. Blues had the majority of the play throughout the match yet it was West Exe that struck first capitalising on a rare Brixington defensive error. After a missed penalty and various other chances for Blues, an equaliser came from Joel Rendall who found the back of the net with a shot that looped over the West Exe keeper and nestled in the far corner. 1 - 1. West Exe grabbed the winner one minute from time with a good break away and goal which left Blues ruing chances missed. Team: Alex Szypillo, Ollie Dawe Harry Trick, Will Flinn Callum McPhee, Callum McClure, Ben Rowland, Mike White (captain), Chris Wright, David Cockayne, Joel Rendall, Jordan Vine, Sam Warren. U13s Cup - Brixington 1 v 2 West Exe AthleticWest Exe took the lead halfway through the first half with "Jimmy" Thorne coming in off the left flank and hitting a thunder bolt from the corner of the box, Brixington pressed West Exe and created many chances, the second half continued with Brixington dominating the game and were rewarded with a goal and with 10 mins to go had a penalty which was saved well by West Exe keeper Jack Mc Andrews, but the final say went to West Exe when a nice interlink between Tom Stanbury and Bas Loram resulting in Stanbury breaking away and finishing the game with 2 mins to go. Exwick 2 Culm United Youth 9Culm United visited Exwick's Ennerdale Road ground and came away with the points following an emphatic second half display. The dusting of snow on the pitch soon melted uder the bright morning sun as the game got underway. It didn't take long for Culm to start moving the ball around but the quality of the final pass proved elusive, although credit must go to the ohsts defence and goalkeeper, especially. Two good shouts for a penalty were the closest that Culm came to breaking the deadlock. Three miutes after the break, Ross Oaten was sent clear by Daniel Hayfield and with the ball nestling in the far corner, Culm had the lead. Suddenly it was 2-0 as Hayfield picked up a short corner and drifted in from the left before picking his spot and after 45', he ran from the halfway line to make it 3-0. Oaten and Hayfield grabbed another goal apiece, before Exwick pulled one back 5-1. Culm made a number of changes and one of the substitutes, Will Gorman scored a fine brace before the goal of the game was netted. Timmy Miles took the ball down the right wing and crossed perfectly for Daniel Hayfield to head home from 6 yards - his fourth of the day. Rory Thomas fired a terrific shot in from 25 yards that the ‘keeper had no chance with before Exwick's persistence secured them a consolation right at the end. In very good form, Josh Hart, Michael Winter, Aron Carpenter and Macaulay Broome, while Ashley Grant also cleared off the line heroically. Many thanks also to Andy for refereeing so well. Twyford Spartans 2 Culm United Youth 3This was a cracking match between the two local rivals, which never slowed nor dulled the enthusiasm of the spectators and which was played out on a heavy pitch. Credit to the hosts for having the patience to get the game on and to the match referee who was excellent. Culm, attacking the Elmore end, started the brighter and were denied by some outstanding defending and goalkeeping. As the match settled, Twyford came into the game more with forays down both flanks. Usually, they found Josh Hart in very good form, with Aron Carpenter at his side. But after 31', a foul on the right hand edge of Culm's penalty and the resultant free-kick was perfectly fired into the far top corner to give the hosts a half-time lead. It was a little harsh on Culm so their attitude to the second half would be important. A few minutes into the second period attacking the Tesco end and Culm were level! After a one-two with Macaulay Broome on the edge of the Twyford area, the effervescent Ross Oaten picked his spot to score. A handful of minutes later, the visitors were ahead. Culm were pressing Twyford in the final third and when Ben Tucker's shot was blocked, the ball fell to predator Oaten who prodded the ball home from 4 yards. The lively Daniel Hayfield could have made it 3-1 from a similar distance, but the ‘keeper reacted well to block. Twyford were not out of it and they worked hard on their left to force errors in the Culm defence. Sam Stockman, at right back, was on hand to bravely clear a shot off the Culm line, and another cross went through the 6 yard area, begging for a touch. And then Twyford were rewarded. A shot came down off the crossbar on the goal-line where it was smothered home. Despite the efforts of both teams, it looked like the game was headed for a draw until, 4 minutes from the end, Oaten turned his marker after a good pass from hayfield, and he fired low into the far corner for the winner. A dramatic late winner altho' the impartial may have preferred a draw. Harry Martin was excellent as was Cameron Wright, Timmy Miles, Rory Thomas, Michael Winter, Will Gorman, Kieren Buckley and Ben Tucker. Culm United 4 Brixington 0After a long 5 week delay, it was football at last at Magelake Meadow in Uffculme and what a good game both teams served up. Despite the scoreline, the game was competitive and closely fought for long periods and all the boys put in a great effort from the first whistle to the last. Having weathered an early storm from the visitors, Ross Oaten sent Timmy Miles clear on the right flank and his shot was well saved by David Cockayne in the Brixington goal. On their next attack, though, Culm were ahead - Daniel Hayfield's defence splitting ball was collected by Oaten whose low shot graced the back of the net for 1-0. Brixington came back but there was a now spring in Culm's step as the team played the ball out from the back, through the middle to the forwards. After a couple of corners, the next from the right caused a scramble at Brixington's far post before oaten coolly slotted the second for Culm. Minutes later, another corner was cleared the edge of the visitors box where the lively Rory Thomas returned the ball over the ‘keepers head for 3-0. There were still 10' left before the break during which Brixington hit the outside of the excellent Harry Martin's post, but no more goals. Into the second half and Brixington started brightly until play reached the outstanding Josh Hart's back four, where Culm would regain possession and counter-attack. It was ebb-and-flow until the last 5 minutes when, after a Hayfield free-kick smacked the left hand Brixington, a lay-off from Ben Tucker, sent Oaten free and he wriggled past the ‘keeper to seal a hat-trick and an excellent win. This was most definitely a team performance in which all shone but Josh Hart and Ross Oaten starred for Culm. Broadclyst 2 Culm United Youth 5On a good surface and under a clear sky, a good game was played out under the watchful eye of Steve Hayfield, stand-in referee. It took only a minute and a half for Ross oaten to wriggle free of the home defence to slide his shot under the advancing ‘keeper, from 8 yards. But then, 5 minutes later, Culm showed their defensive frailties and Broadclyst equalised in a similar fashion! Daniel Hayfield then reasserted the visitors advantage with a good strike inside thee area, only for Broadclyst to equalise with a good shot from just inside the box, after Culm failed to clear a corner. Then, from a Culm corner, Will Gorman stooped to head into the far corner and this time the visitors held the lead into halftime. Twenty seconds after Culm restarted the second half, than the score was 4-2. Josh Hart played the ball to Ross Oaten, whose give-and-go with Hayfield set him free to run at the goalkeeper. Despite then playing some excellent football which created numerous 1v1s, Culm did not extend their lead and finish their scoring until 5 minutes from the end - Hayfield capping a good personal display. Harry Martin played well, as did Cameron Wright and Ben Tucker on his return to the team. BRIXINGTON BLUES - 4 v PINHOE PANTHERS - 2Brixington Blues remain unbeaten and move to top slot in division 2 courtesy of a 4 - 2 win against visitors Pinhoe Panthers. Blues were behind three minutes into the game after some strong Pinhoe possession culminating in a left foot strike which, partly due to the wet conditions, Brixington keeper Alex Szypillo could not contain. Brixington drew level midway through the first-half when Jordan Vine collected a pinpoint pass over the Panthers' defence and found the back of the net with a cool finish. Joel Rendall put Blues ahead via the penalty spot after Callum McClure was pushed in the back in the Pinhoe area. It was Joel who nearly made it 3 - 1 when he received the ball on the left wing and ran with it passing three Pinhoe players, only to see his shot bounce off the post and cleared away. Blues' third goal was the result of some neat midfield passing and an accurate through ball from skipper Mike White which Jordan Vine latched onto and gave Panthers' keeper no chance by shooting low and hard into the corner of the net. A missed penalty by Joel Rendall seemed to give Pinhoe an extra gear and soon they used the impetus to pull a goal back with some good work down the right and a calm finish from six yards. Ten minutes from time Brixington's Arnold Godbeer found the net with a superb header only to have it ruled offside, thus followed a sustained attack from Pinhoe to which Blues' defence and goalkeeper Alex Szypillo were able to deal with. Blistering pace from Sam Warren created many chances for Brixington Blues late on and one such chance fell to Arnold Godbeer who ran with the ball and hit a fierce shot low from the corner of the area to beat the keeper and send Blues to a 4 - 2 win. Team: Alex Szypillo, Will Flinn, Josh Whiller, David Cockayne, Ollie Dawe, Harry Trick, Callum McClure, Mike White (capt), Chris Wright, Ben Rowland, Arnold Godbeer, Jordan Vine, Joel Rendall, Sam Warren. Pinhoe 5 Culm United Youth 2 - League Cup October 17th 2009On a very good surface, an entertaining game was watched by a fair crowd. Culm made one or two useful forays into the area before a good shot from 27 yards went high into the Culm net, for the hosts, after6'. Ross Oaten equalised on 11' for the visitors who then looked like they might score more, with shots that went just wide or which were well held by the excellent guardian of the Pinhoe goal. But it was Pinhoe who scored again from long range, into the top of the net. Into the second half, and Culm's efforts turned into frustration as Pinhoe scored a third (from very good flank play). Oaten scored another with 10' to go and as Culm huffed and puffed, Pinhoe broke and added to their tally twice more to give a flattering scoreline. Very, very well played to the match referee - Neil Graham and all best wishes to Pinhoe in the next round! Under 13's League Cup Round 1 --- Tedburn Saints 1 - 4 Brixington BluesOn a large pitch and with a good crowd Brixington started the match with the consistent work ethic that is their trademark. Led again by Mike White in midfield probing creating openings it was clear that the unbeaten Tedburn would have a busy morning. Joel Rendall and Harry Trick both tormenting the Tedburn defence with pace and superb crossing from the wings. Midway through the first half Rendall was set free by Mike White to produce a superb solo goal with confidence. Jordan Vine then added a second just before half time with a well taken drive. After the break Tedburn pulled one back with a free kick from just outside the box giving Alex Szypillo little chance. The Blues pushed forward again with Chris Wright hitting a well taken volley just outside the box to score the Blues' third. TEAM: Alex Szypillo, Josh Whiller, Oliver Dawe, William Flinn, David Cockayne, Harry Trick, Ben Rowland, Callum McClure, Mike White, Jordan Vine, Chris Wright, Arnold Godbeer, Joel Rendall. BEACON KNIGHTS - 2 v BRIXINGTON BLUES - 3Brixington's second match of the season looked set to be an entertaining encounter with Beacon Knights due to Blues having three players out and goalkeeper Alex Szypillo taken to hospital before kick off, giving Brixington just nine players including stand-in goalie David Cockayne . Playing a 4-3-1 formation, Blues gave the home side a fair bit of trouble especially Arnold Godbeer, Joel Rendall and Jordan Vine, it was Vine though who on twenty minutes had the opportunity to send Blues into the lead from the spot after Mike White was brought crashing down in the area. However the usually on target Vine sent his penalty over the crossbar. Ten minutes later Brixington did get the lead after a great ball from Vine put Joel Rendall through on the left who lost his marker before rounding the keeper then slotting home, 1 - 0 to Blues. A late first half goal for Beacon Knights ensured both teams came out for the second half looking to take the lead which Knights did with a well taken shot from the corner of the 18-yard box which nestled in the side-netting giving David Cockayne no chance. Beacon Knights led 2 - 1 for about thirty seconds until Jordan Vine latched on to a pass from Mike White, then struck from 25 yards to bring Blues level 2 - 2. Brixington's nine men were sure they could get a third and they did in style with the ever dangerous Arnold Godbeer scoring with a well directed header, 3 - 2 to Blues with ten minutes to go. Beacon Knights searched for a way through the Blues defence but to no avail and so the final whistle blew on a superb performance from Brixington Blues. TEAM: David Cockayne, Callum McClure, Josh Whiller, Harry Trick, Ben Rowland, Mike White, Jordan Vine, Arnold Godbeer, Joel Rendall. BRIXINGTON BLUES - 6 CREDITON YOUTH - 1Brixington's first game of the season proved to be an emphatic yet hard fought win over league newcomer's Crediton Youth. A first half hat trick for Jordan Vine was the result of some staunch defending and accurate passing by Blues who battled hard against the visiting Crediton side to reach the break leading 3 - 0. The second half saw Brixington increase their lead to 5 - 0 with goals from Chris Wright and Ben Rowland, Crediton did get a goal back late on but the superb Chris Wright scored his second to give Blues a well deserved three points. Team: Alex Szypillo, David Cockayne, Ollie Dawe, Josh Whiller, Harry Trick, Mike White, Joel Rendall, Ben Rowland, Chris Wright, Callum McClure, Arnold Godbeer, Jordan Vine. Culm United Youth 5 Pinhoe 1Culm's first home game of the new campaign was blessed with sunshine and an excellent surface.
