Heavitree U11 v Cullompton Rangers - Saturday February 19th
On a pleasant spring morning, Heavitree played host to Cullompton Rangers. With many boys playing together for the first time, Heavitree took a while to settle and Cullompton had the better of the opening exchanges.
After a spell of intense pressure by Cullompton, the deadlock was finally broken as Cullompton opened their account. Heavitree responded well with Guy Geeson putting pressure on the Cullompton defence.
Matthew Davison crossed the ball following a good run down the right wing and Kathryn Brown rose above the defender to head the ball goal wards, Guy then applied the faintest of touches to ensure the ball crossed the line.
Straight from the kick off Cullompton were on the attack and Tom Blunden was soon called upon to make several crucial saves in goal. Eventually Cullompton regained the lead after Heavitree failed to clear their lines.
Despite great clearances from Brandon George in the centre of the Heavitree defence, Cullompton continued to pile on the pressure, and a well taken free kick caught out the defenders to make the score 3-1.
A great defensive header from Kathryn on the stroke of half time ensured that Heavitree were only two goals behind at the break.
Half time changes saw Brandon take the gloves from Tom who went up front, and Guy moved back to the centre of defence. Again Cullompton were the brighter side, passing well on the sticky surface, forcing Brandon to make a save right on the line.
More Cullompton pressure followed but they were unable to get past Guy who was dealing with everything that came his way. When he was finally beaten, Brandon was no had to make a superb one handed save low down to his left.
Despite the heroics of Brandon and Guy, Heavitree's defence were overrun again and Cullompton duly increased their lead.
In spite of the score line, Heavitree never gave up. Luke Matthews and Danny Ward continued to press in midfield and twins Luke and Reece Hutchings became more confident bringing the ball out of defence. Matthew made several more mazy runs down the right wing. This pressure finally paid off, when having won a corner Matthew sent over a low cross which Tom turned in for his first goal of the season.
Not to be outdone, Cullompton responded well and extended their lead once again.
By now, the game was opening up with both teams having good periods of pressure. Following another excellent cross by Matthew, though this time from the left, Jack Lethbridge saw his effort sail over the bar.
With newfound belief, Matthew weaved his way down the middle of the pitch and unleashed a show which was too strong for the keeper to handle, bringing Heavitree back within striking distance at 6-3.
Having given themselves a lifeline, Heavitree were still being outrun at the back, but again and again the Cullompton attack was being thwarted by Guy, but eventually his luck ran out and Cullompton extended their lead twice in quick succession.
Following some good interlinking play between Charlie and Jack, Jack unleashed an unstoppable shot to bring Heavitree one goal closer once again, but it was not to be their day, as just before the full time whistle, Cullompton struck one more time to end up worthy 9-4 winners.
A great game played in a great spirit. Well done to both teams.
Man of the Match
This was a difficult decision to make. Several players influenced the game at different times but today it was a position that stood out more than anyone player. The man of the match award goes to the central defenders for each half, Brandon George and Guy Geeson.
