Stoke Hill Rangers U12 0 - 0 Sidmouth Warriors U12
Both sides started briskly, with attacking obviously on the mind of both managers. This was not your normal boring 0-0 draw but a very entertaining game that either side could have snatched. With Sidmouth and Rangers both having several efforts cleared off the line.
Rangers should have opened the scoring when Man of the Match Krystian Struminski was put clean through only to be denied by an inform Sidmouth keeper, but this was to be the story at both ends. An excellent game played in the right spirit.
Tedburn Panthers 1 - 4 West Hill Wasps
Tedburn welcomed fellow league title contenders West Hill Wasps to Barley Park for the opening game of 2012.
On a heavy pitch passing football was a challenge but both teams approached the game with good intentions. After some good early Tedburn pressure led by an irrepressible Toby Tapp West Hill Wasps opened the scoring after a fine cross was deflected by the Tedburn keeper into the path of a West Hill forward who confidently stroked the ball home. Periods of sustained pressure at both ends produced some fine defending but it was the pace, good close control and versatility of the Wasps attack which led to a West Hill forward smartly rounding the keeper to take a 2 - 0 lead into half time.
A change of formation, the slope and good early possession led to the deficit being halved by Archie Osborne who converted a goalmouth scramble from close range. Tedburn appeared dominant with West Hill struggling to contain the Tedburn mobility but pressure was not converted into goals. West Hill strikers always looked like they had more goals in them and a third was added after the Tedburn defence failed to clear. Despite good endeavour Tedburn's early 2nd half dominance dwindled into an open game where West Hill always battled, were composed on the ball and generated dangerous counter-attacks. On one of these slick moves a fourth goal was added and despite occupying the final 1/3 Tedburn could do no better than hitting the cross bar.
A first defeat of the season for Tedburn was inflicted by a very good West Hill Wasps side. Credit to Tedburn's attitude in defeat and let's look forward to regaining our momentum in our next match away at St Martin's.
