Under 15s League Cup Rnd 2 - Culm Sampford 2 Okehampton 4
Magelake hosted 3 cup games today and given the rain in recent weeks, it was a huge effort to prepare the pitches in time. They looked stunning though - better than Wembley - groundsman's eye-candy!!?
Okehampton travelled with just 10 and it might have been worse for Culm Sampford but for a late availabilities - never known an injury crisis like it. So the hosts with just one recognised defender took a while to settle. Even with 10 and despite their apparent league position, Okehampton remain a very good footballing side with quality throughout - they were disciplined and played to their strengths.
Culm started well and after 11 minutes took the lead when Daniel Hayfield's inch perfect ball inside Okehampton's central defence was read brilliantly by Jordan Armstrong, whose first time touch was expertly directed low past the 'keeper. The hosts should have made more of their opportunities and but despite coming close, nothing really troubled the visiting goalkeeper. At the back, Culm's makeshift defence coped quite well against the marauding man-of-the-match, Josh Stanbury. Otherwise, Jez Cross had to tip over a swirling freekick.
Into the second period, it was a stuning voley which brought Okehmpton back into the game. From a corner, the ball was cleared and from 20 yards, and excellent volley looped over Cross for 1-1. It shocked Culm and galvanised Okehampton who found the gathering wind helpful as made life more difficult for Culm's defence. Minutes later, Stanbury robbed the Culm left back and advanced int the area before beating the goalie at the far post. 1-2. Then it was 1-3 as Okehampton's momentum kicked-in.
With 10' to go, Culm did start to build some useful attacks and altho' Okehampton defended defiantly, Culm did hit the bar and cause the odd scramble before Gabe Hewitt's pass in the box was taken by Armstrong and expertly fnished in off the far upright. 2-3! Grandstand finish in sight? It would have been but for a foul near the touchline which on the wind and with pace curled perfectly over Cross. 2-4 and good luck for the rest of the competition!
